long time no post.... so....

I'm attempting to go for a warm 70's style mix .

The vocals haven't been recorded yet, but already I'm having trouble with the mid range - probably because I'm not used to mixing piano.
So far it sounds o.k on my monitors and in the car - but there seems to be a lot going on in the 330-400 range. If I cut it - the mix sounds too thin. I'm just thinking I might have more trouble when the vocals are done.
Anyway, I'm after some feedback on the mix for this tune.
It's probably a moot point without the vocals there to hear - just thought I'd get in ahead before the guy turns up so I look less of a dick when it goes horribly wrong :grin:

Nice one. Could be an old Aerosmith Ballad. But still it´s only a scribble. Where´s the lyrics? I know the tune after 40 secs. So where´s the info - where´s the pathetic voice?
Also the sounds are o.k. but especially drums could be more "non plastic". Invest some time on the mix too..

But remember I like it or else I wouldn´t have made the effort writing...

Go on and finish that song!

i think it'll be o.k. when you have the voice to balance everything out. yes, it's a little hot in the lower midrange, but that could be eq'd out of the guitar a little and the pno a little...anyway, neither instrument will likely be that far up front when there's a vocal.....just get the vocal on and you'll find a way to make it all fit together. the song is already so well done, i'd be amazed to see it turn out badly. i get lots of praise for work not nearly that well done, so buck up!

Turns out the vocalist was happy with the arrangement and mix was O.K for him to work with, will upload the final song when finished.
Must remember not to freak out :eek:

I agree, that it is a bit Aerosmithish. I could get a little tirred from the allways equally timed snare-symbal combo. Waiting for the next step.

Hi again guys,
Thanks so much for the feedback, encouragement and constructive criticisms.

Any ideas on what I can do to fix the drums and not make them sound so "plastic" or robotic.

I actually played the snare and some toms in on my keyboard and tried to leave timing errors to get it to sound a bit more real.

The snare sample is a multi Pearl medium deep (don't know if that's authentic for the era) ; zildian cymbals and a 4 bar kick and hats sample.

The toms are just some unknown samples that came with SR202 Rock kit and some other 1 bar tom fill that I found.
I'm not used to programming big tom runs as is probably evidenced here.

Anyway, hoping to have a preliminary mix with vocals in a few weeks - will leave the drums alone for now until I see where the vocal takes it.

I'm enjoying actually trying to write songs instead of tunes.

Oh, one other question - anyone know what would be a safe bet in terms of a good microphone to use on male falsetto vocals? I'm currently just making do with a cheap ElectroVoice PL 20 - I think it's meant to be all-rounder multi purpose - but I'm sure it's not really a good choice for vocals ?

nice... no negative critics. but then i know jack shit about live/real sounding stuff.

so basically to my ears it's good good good.
