Hi

I am a newbie to electronic music (been a musician for years) and would like a few opinions on what to think about when creating electronics music...

When you make music with synths, generally, do you make your own presets or just use the presets on the synth?
If you make your own synth setting do you have a picture of how something will sound if you alter certain filters or LFOs? When you write music do you have a certain sound in your head that you will try to find a setting for on your synth? What would be the best way to get this ability?

the best way would be to go through the modular tutorials. learn what an oscillator is, how the amp env shapes the sound, and what happens if you run it through a filter. modulate the filter with lfo's or envelope. if this gets you really excited, visit the modular section and adern to get to the heart of synthesis.
i like to watch though

I'm (still) trying to learn just to follow my intuition when making music. By that I mean, just experiment with the material, synths, effects etc. untill something you like or find interesing turns up, and then keep that and integrate it with other things you find interesting.
In short, I don't have a clear idea in my mind while working (an idea usually forms while working though...) and I don't care about where the material comes from or if I designed the synth-patch myself, what matters is whether the result or sound moves me somehow.

I read an interview with Brian Eno the other day, who had a few interesing ideas about how to think while creating music:

Enjoy!

I spend hours aside from composing music just working with the synths, creating sounds, etc. I usually go through preset lists and memorize ones I like, memorize the sounds, and then, when a piece calls for a certain-sounding sound, I can easily think of which preset on which synth would work best. I actually create most of my own sounds, but I do use some factory presets, too. I don't think I ever use the factory presets of analog synths, only FM and samples.

Yes, the Modular tutorial would be an excellent place to start out -- I myself learned how to program synths by reading that tutorial!!

Good luck,
