Hi
I have a TC Electronics Fireworx that I use for recording and was thinking that I could connect it to my AES/BU with XLR cables... but I have two questions...
Do I need a word clock? If so, what sort of cable is it and how would i link it up and to what?
If I have a 96k project and the output of my Fireworx is 48k, how will that fit into the project?

1st, aes/ebu encapsulate it's own clock, like adat, but wordclock is always prefered if you can use it.
2nd, a 96khz project will ot work at all with the 48khz of the fireworx, BUT behringer has a thing called srcmatcher that convert samplerates on the fly between units. Probably exist at other manufacturers also, dunno...

The cable standard for external wordclocks is no better (in fact AES is probably much preferable as a cable spec). But a good dedicated wordclock has better stability than a cheap wordclock.
"RG59" with BNC connectors is the cable "type". You can get cheap old stock at Radio Shack in North America, or order from Redco.
Z Systems specializes in sample rate converters. RME also makes one or two units.
Hope this helps,
Johann
