Upgrade from P3

Hello Folks ,
I was wondering if someone could suggest a good proceesor / mobo combination I could use for a new system ? My current system only allows 500mb ram and I think I'll be needing more these days. Currently I'm using ASUS TUSL2-C with P3 1.4Ghz Tualatin-S processor ( which has been very good ) What do yo all think ?

I'm planning on buying a new computer too, here's my set up:

intel mainboard D875PBZ
intel p4 3.2 ghz 800
1gb kingston memory
antec atx case (without the psu)
Zalman ATX Ultra-Quiet PSU 400W ZM400B-APS
vga matrox p650 agp
hd 80 seagate gb 7200 sata

hey I'm still using a p3 500 mhz works fine, think you should keep your computer and invest the money into something else tho...

I have few to none trouble with a Celeron 1 Gig - I would keep the Tualatin P3 1.4

What do you need much Ram for ?
Badly tuned sample libs on uneffective engines ?
Kontakt or similiar stuff will eat up the slight advantage in speed that a P4 might provide - you will at best end with a system as fast as your current one.
A P4 2.8 is not twice as fast as your current CPU, I guess around 30% in real world apps - but that's not a scientific figure.

For huge samples you can still rely on GIGA and live with your current max mem - buy a quality lib for half the money you spare instead.

Yes Tom , The ASUS / Tualatin seems pretty good , seems as good as my other P4 2.6Gh system which has 1Ghz ram , I was thinking the extra ram would allow more to go on in real-time in CubSX etc . Cheers, Michael

hello,

this is what i've been using for 6 months now :
Mobo : Abit IS7-E
Processor : PIV 2.8GHz C
2 x 512 MB Kingston Ram
I'm using Cubase SX2.
I used a PIII 800 before, and i really sax the difference - obviously...
But i am not at all a professionnal in computing stuff...

for sx, something around a p4 3ghz(northwood, 512k cache) and the intel d865perl is cheap and reliable.

the discussions in the tech forum about the nforce3 chipset and the amd64 look very interesting also...

Yes , that prgm does look amazing, think I'll buy and have a play with it . Agreed about Cubase ....not sure I like Pinnacle/Steinberg corporate attitude anymore. Getting a bit ugly methinks.

Can I buy your 1.3 GHz Cpu when you are done with it? I run the same board with a lowly 700 MHz cpu, and I have wanted to upgrade but haven't had any luck finding a used a 1.3 GHz CPU for sale.

Doubt whether I'll sell the Tualatin , Nprime ...it's too good. The word on the 1.4G Tualatin-S is that it was a source of much embarrasment to Intel as it routinely outperformed all their P4 releases until fairly recently....and I believe it . If I hear of another going I'll let you know . I wanted to get more than 500 mb ram on the tusl2c but apparently can't be done , pity ,cos it's a great processor/mobo combination. Cheers, Michael

Tualatins aren't that rare on eBay - unfortunately they don't fit on my mobo...
