well, i guess it's time to crow so that there'll be another positive post.....

last week i delivered a system to a client and it worked PERFECTLY from day one.

system included:

antec case w/ 400watt true power supply
intel d865perl
intel boxed 3ghz p4 northwood
corsair twinx 3200 1gb
2x wd 160gb caviar
1x wd 40gb caviar
cheap sony cdrw
evga mx440 dual vga
nec 19"
2x scope project(one classic, one plus, slots 1&2 no irq sharing)
3x behringer ad8000
cubase sx2
magix musicstudio2004 (for cd mastering via the audio studio prog)

this system was constructed for the purpose of 24track recording, but it does the studio in a box thing very capably. the first time used, it recorded over 3 hours of 24 tracks without even a hiccup.the second day it recorded another hour and a half(straight). i disabled all the xp graphics eye candy and ht(not because ht won't work, but because the gains aren't enough to chance losing the rock-solid stability). no other major tweeks were done. this was as close to true "plug and play"
as i have seen. the behringers work very well, although as typical for cheaper gear, they are not as well shielded against ground loops as they could be.

the main point is that good parts properly installed are 100% hassle free(like a mac?!). no click or pops, no midi problems, no headaches. because of the nature of music software(thousands of lines of code), there is always the chance of trouble(the more sophisticated the machine, the more ways to break down), but trouble should be the exception not the rule.

ALL of the software around has bugs, but it is still very useful. when i look at that sytem i just built which cost the owner a few thousand dollars and i compare to what was needed only 10-15 years ago( a truck and $300,000 or more) to do the same mobile 24 track work(a tower, a monitor, a 4 space rack with the ad/da and a headphone amp) i am amazed...especially when i can have a more turn-key solution with the same or greater reliability....

What OS and, if any, what tweaks were applied?

My dual mobo is a Intel 860, so, I'd say good mobo choice!
Although I'd enable HT, let the customer sweat too

Excellent! Well done Gary!

And it is good too to post positive cases... there is enough negative cases and complaining everywhere!...

well done Gary, could you tell us what were the costs without the added software?

costs ???
ok, 2 Scopes and 3 Behringer converters - but on the PeCee side ?

the only relevant piece of gear I find on the list above are the 2 19" Necs (I assume TFT displays)
So the DAW costs are mainly determined by viewing comfort

As Gary said - price usability ratio is close to unbelievable - and obviously the trick is to pick the right parts from the palette of a few thousand offers...
good job

cheers, Tom

the os was xp professional, tweeked minimally. (sorry! )

the client was charged $1800 for the computer, monitor, keyboard, mouse and o.s.

the sale went through the store i work for, so there's a little bit for the store as well my fee in the price. depending on price fluctuations,a similar system could be built for $1200-$1500 if one did it one's self.

as an aside, this machine maxes out dsp(12) with masterverbs (>10 functioning while playing back 48 tracks in cubse sx) and records 24 tracks while dsp is maxed(28 ch asio,7 masterverbs, minimax recording midi, stm2248 w/phase compensation, 24 ch ADAT) with no complaints.

*edit* btw, only one display is being used at the moment, and a crt was chosen to save $$$.

Gary, you should rename the thread to something like "100% working system"
