Hello freinds.

I have had many DAW setups and never have i been able to force my cards to share the same IRQ. NEVER !!

Despite what iv'e tried to do...atempting configure BIOS......aaahh....there are many ways as you all know.
At the end Windows just won't let me!

Are there many of you out there with existing DAW setups where CW cards share IRQ ?!?!

If there are....how the h*ll did you manage it ?!?!?!

I use asus p4p800, and to get 2 boards to share IRQ, I needed to check in the manual since the IRQ sharing is hardwired into the system. So, basically I chose which card shared IRQ with what, by choosing the PCI slot it would go in. Some slots share IRQ with USB, some with other slots, and some with onboard LAN. Right now tho, I don't have my 2 CW cards on the same IRQ since it caused problems with my PCI IDE card. Runs without problems tho.

Is IRQ sharing so critical? I haven't had any problems without sharing..

Sharing IRQ's?
If I'd have some, I'd give them to you, for free!

Well i have recently started digging in all this about IRQ because of my problems with USB. I cannot use USB inteface om my DAW.
USB makes DAW shut down violently.

And i assumed it must be because of IRQ conflicts. Then i started putting myself into this "Standard PC mode" versus "ACPI mode" and discovered alot of facts.

If i can assign my cards IRQ or atleast se what slots share IRQ with as you said USB and LAN etc etc...then i can put cards in other slots that don't share IRQ with USB or LAN.

Then i can use USB on my DAW withouy having to buy a new MOBO. I know there are people out there using USB-midi interfaces together with CW cards in their DAW's and i really want to be one among them without having to spend more money on a nother DAW system.

So to answer your question....yes it is important to me.

And Hubird. You are to sweet

The only place you can asign (real) IRQs to individual PCI slots is the BIOS if it lets you. Are you trying to set the IRQ on an onboard USB? I don't think you will be able to do that.
Type in "msinfo32" in the Run box and look in the Hardware section under IRQ, you will see which IRQs are assigned to what and see which ones are shared.
Also if the system is crashing, it would be helpful the have the crash code.

Is that USB2 of which you speak? I've made a few postings in the past regarding the perils of enabling that particular interface...

Best to disable it in the BIOS and leave it like that.

If it's USB1 that's causing the problem, then that is rather surprising!

I think that you can assign IRQs to PCI slots if:

ACPI & APIC are both disabled (i.e. computer is in 'Standard PC' mode)

"Plug 'n' Play OS" is disabled in the BIOS.

I'll check exactly what's what with my system this evening and follow-up.

check in your mobo's manual. I think if you have them in proper slots, you're not sharing IRQ. (my BIOS won't let me change sharing)

After you get that right, I think ACPI may even work.. some people say that they've got ACPI and also hyper thread to work properly.. for me, neither of them worked, so I just turned HT off and installed XP in Standard mode.

The actual IRQ number assignment is not (very) important - sharing/not sharing IRQ IS important.
IRQ sharing is hardwired in the motherboard. Your manual should detail what PCI slots will share IRQ.
The IRQ numbers will be assigned by WinXP (with ACPI) or by the MBOard BIOS (with Standard PC).

I use an ASUS P4C800e Deluxe, with ACPI, two Scope boards, USB2 enabled for DVDRW, no IRQ conflicts.

I've got three cards on the same IRQ, I set the computer to "standard pc" in the device manager, this I believe disables Windows XP automatically taking over IRQ management.

Then in my bios I set the three PCI slots that my CW cars are in to the same IRQ.

Not all the PCI slots can share any IRQ you have to work out the IRQ range each slot can have and find three that overlap.

If this is true (I really like to believe it), please put it in the Tips'nTricks forum, the world will be gratefull Image

Same here. 3 cards all sharing irq10 forced in BIOS. Cards in slot 1,2,5. OS installed as "Standard PC". No PlugnPlay OS.

Jngaelin, I doubt you need to buy a new mobo. All you have to do is to look in the mobo's manual and see which slots are hardwired to share IRQ. I think most mobo have slots that share. (in pairs or something)

A lot of motherboards allow you to set manually what IRQ each slot gets. See if there's such an option in yours.

i was trying to do that to, but no success,
installing standard PC mode, setting in BIOS reserved IRQ's, disabling plug and play, but nothing happens, then I stop concern about that since my motherboard supports up to 24 irq's , so I have every CW card on different IRQ, irq16,irq17,irq18 and nothing else sharing with cards, so i guess that's ok too

Hello everybody !!!

It has taken me a few days to test every tip and idea' posted buy you guys here.

It's hard....really....
I just can't get my boards to share IRQ but i was able to run USB2 enabled.....and stable for like 1 day =).

*Edited*
I noticed something. I got a:
"IRQ_NOT_LESS_OR EQUAL" blue creen error message even with USB disabled. I mean with everything none essential on my MOBO disabled. And this only happened with Cubase SX running !!!!! I got a "no audio sync" error in Cubase then sudden "IRQ_NOT_LESS_OR EQUAL" screen the first time.
The other time i got a "audio engine" error then sudden "IRQ_NOT_LESS_OR EQUAL".
Any body with the same issues?

This is not working.
Im no good at things like this. Mabye i should just get a MOBO that would support more IRQ ad's or mabye a MOBO witch other CW users have with running USB2 and CW cards....
Atleast i would know for sertain (hopefully) that it would work from the start.

Im tired of not being able to run DAW with USB2.... There are equipment i would really love to buy for the studio....

Im getting worried:

you have to disable IRQ steering in XP's device manager, otherwise XP will ignore the IRQ settings you provide in the BIOS. device manager, expand the computer tab, right click on "standard pc" or "acpi computer", there's an IRQ steering tab in there. turn it off, and XP will automagically lets you configure things as you want.
