Dunno, I've made tracks whacking chopsticks against cabinet doors with the mic inside. An automated filter sweep on top of it and some compression sold the deal. You can make percussion out of just about anything you can whack a stick at. Hell, even beat boxing is perfectly valid.

I know that's not the answer you were looking for, but what you should use is really not a question of 'what's good' as 'good' is a totally useless word. What is more important is what fits, dynamically and musically with the current project, and that will always change.

You're better off just making a rhythm out of what you have in front of you and then going back over it once you've found the tone or tool you want. At least that way you're still getting the structure of the song down. But no one will tell you what you should use as no one will be using it in the way you will.

Besides, exploring your available tools is part of the spiritual process of music making.

Sorry for this totally punk-ass non-answer. It's just something I've been thinking about a lot lately.

Just to show you I care though...

Roland's HandSonics are awesome if you've got the money. Otherwise, just buy some drumsticks and start banging on every surface you've got in your environment. See what sticks. (...and then clean it)

Also, "DR-008" is a great little VST drum plugin. I use that, Hummel's SFP Drum Synths "plasma," and "DrumVOX," and Spectrasonics' "Stylus" (which is also VST)depending on the sound I'm going for.

Food 4 thunk,
Sam
