Update/mini review about the "The LKV-DM02SK Dual Monitor KVM Switch" from networking outlet Thanks to the person [who wants to remain anonymous] who got it for me.
Review systems
Main PC p4c @ 3.4 ghz
GFti4800
(1280x1024x85hz 32bit , 1280x1024x75hz 32 bit)
Creamware PC
P4 @ 2.4 ghz
Matrox g400
(1280x1024x85hz 16 bit , 1280x1024x75hz 16 bit)
second one is 75hz on both secondary outputs as this is the max my g400 card will do on second monitor out at that resolution, and i matched the refresh rates(see below).
switching
Switching is accomplished from the keyboard by pressing scroll lock 2 times(you hear a beep from the switch) and then up or down arrow, you can use numpad number instead if you wish.
With the resolutions and refresh rates matched between the machines the monitors switch INSTANTLY! it feels like i pressed alt-tab on full screen program.
If you do not set them the same you get the usual monitor "click" as it changes resolutions, as if you started a game or windows is starting up.
You can have the different machines set to different color depth, as long as the resolution and refresh rates are the same, and still get instant switching. I have my creamware machine set to 16 bit and the main one to 32, analog monitors do not really care weather there is 16 or 16 million colors they use the same setting.
Picture quality is better than my previous KVM (belkin omni-cube) switch which had a very slight ghosting on the right side of window edges. not sure if it was the switch or the video cables though.
Mouse/Keyboard
There is about a 1/2 second delay before the mouse becomes active after you have switched(my old one did not have this and sometimes the mouse went crazy, with cursor flying all over and windows and menus opening and closing all over the place for a while..had to press escape about 100 times...super annoying)
On previous switch the scroll wheel would only work on first machine booted up, now it works on both machines no problem.
The state of the keyboard numlock, scroll lock and caps lock is remembered between the 2 machines.
front panel
The switch has a numerical LED that says "1" or "2" rather than just some LEDs, this may not seem like much but i have the thing tucked away under my desk and its pretty dark down there. you normally only look at it in case of trouble and its nice to see a number rather than have to get down and try and look what number the LED is lighted next to.
There is also a button you can use to toggle between the machines, I used it once to see if it worked. probably good for people with servers with no keyboard or something
cables
The cables that are provided are nice, because the keyboard, mouse, and one of the video cables are molded together, so you do not get as much tangle behind your computers.
This simple thing is a good because every bit of simplification back there is a help when you have to move or upgrade something. especially with a DAW with scope/pulsar breakouts, midi, audio, optical and all the other spaghetti sticking out of your machines.
nothings perfect..doh
A small negative thing i noticed was if you shut down windows XP and switch over to the other PC before it has finished turning off windows did not finish shutting down untill I switched back to the PC that was supposed to be "off"
when i switched back it was almost completely done and only took a second more.
Could be because i use a late 80s motorola keyboard with real switches and no windows button!
The cables are a bit short for someone who does not have the 2 machines to be switched close to eeach other. I would guess the maximum distance apart the machines could be would be about 6 feet with the switch in the middle(allowing for a bit of cable routing).
Pros:
Switches 2 monitors at once
No power supply required
numerical LED display of active PC
mouse stabilization delay
clean picture
can boot in any order
Inexpensive
no nonsense sheilded metal enclosure.
cons:
possible windows shut down issue
provided cables a bit short
Neutronium index: 9.5/10
amazing for a no name taiwanese import!
They also make versions for DVI (or wtf its called) for all you rich digital flat panel guys, as well as version for 4 machines with 2 monitors if you have that!!!!!
