As an 80's old-schooler I'm of course happy to find such things still exist

While current general purpose CPU's have a great potential, the software seems to burn vast amounts of the processing power.
The benchmarks used to prove those capabilities are optimized, small pieces of code, rather unlikely to happen in a real world app.
On the other hand DSPs have far less overhead on calculation intense processes and last but not least they do parallelize 'by nature' as opposed to native CPUs.
