I am wondering if the Preamp built in on the MBox can be used as a stand alone to record into SFP? If anyone ever used it I would like to know if the sound quality is OK. I understand they are Focusrite Preamps.

I don't have MBox but my friend does and says the quality of the preamp is pro  I can count on his ears, BTW

I don't suppose it's possible to use the MBox as a standalone device (without opening ProTools software). So in my opinion (as an Audiomedia3 user) you have to open ProTools first so it works like SFP in the background. BTW, 2 background apps at a time? Hmm... worth trying

Samplaire. What I intend to do is use two PCs. One with SFP and the other with MBox/ProTools. Run a line out from MBox into SFP via a mixer(analogue). I think that would be just as good as buying a Preamp. I can also use MBox to record audio tracks sometimes.

Good idea  And you can benefit from ProTools, too  Good luck with your projects

AFAIk ProTools LE has got some latency but only when using plugins. You can set it to the lowest buffer and additionaly there is a setting for just recording (don't remember its name) somewhere in the setups menu
