I WILL BE SELLING NEW MACINTOSH G5'S VERY VERY SHORTLY
Hey Guys,
It's been a while since I've been on these pages. My studio has been doing well albeit a SCOPEless studio. I miss my native system and wish that I could have the best of both worlds so I'm considering the Noah in the very near future to restore some of what I lost.
In any event I've completed my tour with the Navy, come home and have a new job in Milwaukee working for PC/Mac Mall. As many of you know they are the largest distributor/Reseller of Macintosh and HP/Compaq in the country. Additionally they sell everything from IBM, Toshiba and you name it.
Not that I want to be a sales guru for everyone on the planet but if you want to mention Planet Z When contacting me I'll make sure to hook everyone up here with a great price on any Mac upgrades, software (we sell all kinds of software from Cakewalk, Cubase and Logic to Digital Performer)
My Email at PC/Mac Mall is:
howardS@pcmall.com
I know that many of you are oogling the Macintosh G5 and many are waiting on its arrival. Order from me and get yours first. We're supposed to be getting them before anyone else in the USA and have a large amount of them pre-ordered. Add your name to the list and help with the recovery of the economy!
Thanks again for all your support on these pages. Has anyone tried Noah yet and is the keyboard version out?
Regards,

Hi
Do we know if Creamware cards will fit OK and whether SPF will run under 'Classic' OS?
It would be alot of cash to spend to find some limitations. I like the 'sound' of the G5 with Logic but I'm going to wait until Christmas time to see how it performs, when I will consider jumping ship from my PC.
Regards
Kenf

OK first off i don't want to start stirring, but i think people should be informed before making a decision whether to buy form Howard or not. His original post at the top here was also posted on the Mac forum on cubase.net and he was well and truly roasted and in fact the moderators have removed his thread.
It was highlighted that PC/Mac Mall have a very poor returns policy. Basically it seems almost every big name manufacturer's equipment cannot be returned to PC/Mac Mall under any circumstance - it even says so in their returns policy - Howard even posted the returns policy and frankly i wonder how they get any customers with a 'no returns' return policy!
As i say i don't want to start a flame war and if Howard and others can prove me wrong then fine and i'll edit this post accordingly. Also i think it's a bit cheeky that Howard has not posted here for ages - then his first post is a sales pitch.

It's true that almost every computer reseller has return policies that are differnt than department stores. This is comparable to even Best Buy and CompUSA. If you buy a laptop from any reseller in the country basically you can not return it to the reseller. Technology changes on a daily basis and every reseller in the channel has similar policies. Check them out.
Consider that many manufactures provide a money back guarentee the purchaser of the product can not return it to the reseller but the manufacture for credit. This is due to the fact that the manufacture provides the product support necessary to support the product.
In that light if you bought an Apple from me it would come with an Applecare. We are a reseller and in that channel returns, repairs and services are negotiated with the manufacturing agent not the reseller.
The people over at Cubase.net missed the entire point of having the opportunity to buy a G5 my guess probably because it is a lot of money even at a discount and most people in this economy can't afford one. There are a lot of people there who hadn't researched or aren't familiar with sevice policies associated with value added reselling as an industry. They were just flamers.
My question to everyone here is why would you spend $5000 on a computer only to change your mind? If you have service issues or something is broken well that's a different story. We can assist you in getting the best service in the industry.
On this forum the big issue with OSX and the G5 is will CW ever get your stuff up to speed for OSX because you will be able to load OS 9 on your system if you want to run that. I have a customer in graphic arts right now with that same problem. There are a lot of people in the Mac world, myself in cluded, who prefer OS9 because its really fast and I have a gazallion dollars tied up in applications that work in OS9. When I get my G5 I'll be running it in OS9. Maybe I'll post some issues here for the forum to review.

Fine, just like everyone to be informed. In the UK i think things are a little different as we have 'statutory rights', although i have Applecare i'm sure any seller of computers here would have to accept a return (certainly within the 12 month standard guarantee), regardless of any additional care policy i had taken.
The same here in Holland.
Mostly I buy computer and music stuff from well known Dutch and German stores with - or having just - mail order service.
European legislation concerning mail or tel sell isn't bad, I can send back the stuff in two weeks when I don't like it, and some of them even offer a 2 year garantee by their own.
I let you know the G5 prices I get here, see if there's much difference
Good luck with your PSR (personal selling rate)

I'm probably completely wrong, but why would G5's be able to boot into OS 9 while the latest G4's can't?
Apple is specifically allowing this? I was under the impression all new Macs except certain G3 ibooks were OS X only and not able to run OS 9 as of late 2003 or early this year.
Can someone clarify this?

Hi
They have a 'classic' option which is like OS9. One other thing I noticed is that the PCI buss is the new PCI X buss. I am a little unsure how this will affect CW cards, it uses 3.3v instead of 5v. Some threads on other forums say it will not run old style PCI cards because of this, although the 1.6G machine does not use PCI X it still uses 3.3v. All sounds a bit confusing at the moment, we will have to wait a few months to see what happens.

Howard, I'd also be very, very interested in the trick how you gonna do that.On 2003-08-07 07:28, ohmelas wrote:

Did Apple/US come back to their mind and remove the 'no OS9 boot' from the 'bios' due to customer complaints ?
Or is it the usual disassemble-find-patch it-process

cheers, Tom
Hi aMo
I'm only going on what I read.
http://discussions.info.apple.com/WebX? ... @.59984bc1 and
http://discussions.info.apple.com/WebX? ... @.5998484a
It seems that the speed is configurable looking at Apples spec. It maybe that CW cards are fine at 3.3v. Maybe PCI cards are 3.3v nowadays I was hoping that someone would know.

Hey Guys,
All really good questions. It so happens that besides sales, I'm one heck of a tech both on Mac and PC. Here's the skinny on a couple of issues in this thread, and I'd be glad to help...
For those who are interested in understanding the migratory path of PC's in over the next 10 years in regards to the PCI standard read the following articles:
http://www.inqst.com/articles/ServerIO/
http://www.serverworks.com/technology/p ... ePaper.pdf
According to Compaq's whitepaper on the PCI-X standard above, "A key reason for the success of each new generation of PCI has been that
they have been fully backward compatible with the previous versions. PCI-X 2.0 continues the PCI tradition with complete backward compatibility. Even legacy 32-bit/33MHz PCI adapter cards that are keyed for 3.3V or universal signaling can plug into the highest performance PCI-X 2.0 slots and operate seamlessly. And the converse is also true. The newest, highest-performance PCI-X 2.0 adapter cards can readily operate in 3.3V PCI slots from pastgeneration computers."
A more poignant question regarding the use of OS 9 on G4 and G5 computers raises many eyebrows.
Apple sites their compatibility chart for systems on this site:
"http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html ... om%3a80%2f"
This site doesn't state that OS9 will be incompatible with G4s but does not mention G5s. I have a ticker in with Apple to follow up on that. More pending...
In terms of Creamware and OsX. I believe that's the bigger issue because if they would have developed in Linux like they said they would have several years ago it would have been easy to port that to OSX but guess what...[we're just not there].
I'm curious about a couple of other things...
What is everyone migrating to since the CW went bankrupt? I know that I jumped ship about a year and a half ago and went to the Roland VS-2480 paid up with Cakewalk and an ADAT. It all works great together. I get 16 channels of tape, 24 channels of HD and 128 channels of MIDI and they never ever crash and all play nice with each other. Most of the time I don't need the tape so I run faster with out it.

Obviously you haven't been around here for a while, but you'll find that CW are actually in a reasonably healthy position; do you think they'd bother releasing things like Noah, B-2003 and Pro One in that last couple of months if they were out of business? Check http://www.planetz.com/forums/viewtopic ... orum=10&68 for more background. What is everyone migrating to since the CW went bankrupt?
i don't think anyone here is migrating anywhere (excepting possibly Magnus
