Can I get more than 128 steps of automation?
Immanuel, I wouldn't bother about the 'original' automation steps recorded. The programs usually use sophisticated interpolations which result in very smooth effective movements 
There's certainly a setup in Samplitude how those 'dots' are interconnected. Cubic, polynominal and spline are terms often used in that context.

Also just fyi, Logic audio with a logic control will use (14? or) 16bits of automation directly from the Logic controller, and of course there are curves there as well etc.

Tom is indeed correct however that most properly made devices should be able to use the regular 7-bit midi data and 'interpolate' to 'smooth' the zipper noise associated with 128 'steps'. My virus, for instance, does this as well...
