quicky: how to turn ACPI off without reinstall

Ok.. I tried searching for this but I just couldn't seem to find it. I remembered there was a way to manually change the drivers... can someone tell me the process in detail?

Hello there!

I think this is the way to do it:
Right-click My Computer -> Properties -> Hardare -> Device Manager -> Computer -> Update Driver

and I just get the drivers from the XP CD?

Yes, just select 'Standard PC' as driver. On reboot, most hardware will be re-detected, so this can take a while. There will be 2 'Computer' drivers still, of which only one can be removed, the ACPI driver.

There has been suggestions that this is not the most reliable way. A full re-install may work better if you have any difficulties.

This screenshot's taken after installing new mobo/cpu/etc, as far as i remember the same goes for changing HAL mode. Delete all old/transparent drivers.

word of warning..
swapping out of acpi mode in this way may completely disable your windows install!
make sure you backup first

It happened to me and I had no choice but to reinstall. This is a problem due to the fact it has to reload many drivers and can fail doing this. Its a recognised problem with no remedy.

what do you mean by disabling windows install? Like it won't allow you to do an overwrite install if something goes wrong?

hm, I cant remember if I attempted to repair it or do an install over the top. All I remember is that I couldnt get it to boot to that partition (after attempting to turn it from acpi -> standard) so ended up doing a complete reinstall. Thankfully I was able to boot to another partition and backup my data though.
