The guy looks like a freak...

Peoples are listening, but no moving...

He's very talented, but i wasn't impressed by the 'danceability' of it's stuff.

But, damn is he precise on those scratch! I also noticed he used a 'looping' machine, with a kinda of 'hold & loop the last x seconds of that sound' device. Would love to have this possibility in sfp.

hip-hop turntablist DJ-ing is very different from dance music DJ-ing. With standard DJ-ing the emphasis is on smooth mixing of the beat of one tune with the next, hip-hop scratch DJ-ing is more kinda head music and in my opinion has more to do with freeform jazz than beat-mixing 4/4 kick drum music in a club.

And A-trak is one of the best, I remember seeing him on a DMC video when he was 15... it's good to see he's trying new and interesting things as he gets older. Other greats of this art include Q-bert (something of an undisputed master) and DJ Disk, two of my favourites.

The main reason that this isn't that danceable to is that he is doing it to show off his skills (which are truly remarkable ! ). Clearly this was a gig like the DMC awards which was designed for 'virtuosi' performances. I'm sure he wouldn't do that sort of thing if he was doing a normal night.

Although, if you're this good, maybe people don't pay to come to a 'normal night'

God, I thought the looping was just incredible - and did you notice - he never ever not once checked a record for the beginning of a beat or tune or sample or . . . pppfffff . . . this is a real virtuosi !

I remember there was a guy from Vietnam in a DMC video a while back that started scratching and playing traditional vietnamese bamboo instruments.. (some sort of mix of cultures!) Anyhow, these DJs get more creative every year!

The interest of that part is the fact that he was scratching along with Di Meola's solo.

Sorry I didn't listen to the whole thing. I remember the first time I heard orchestral hits it sounded so kewl then I kept hearing them and quickly got sick of them, same thing with that annoying james brown sample but the scratching has got to be the grand daddy of all annoying gimmicks.

well, to each his own, of course

but i thought this was absolutely fantastic stuff... incredible skills.
it took me two times as well to notice the similtaneous scratch/guitar solo thing. amazing.

anyone know what kind of mixer/loop device he's using?
very impressive/creative.
