Sorry for the flurry of questions...newbie alert...

First and foremost (and before I even think about using Cubase) :???: I want to use my Yamaha SW1000XG purely for playback of MIDI files and the PS1 for everything else such as Windows system sounds, .wav player/recorder, mp3 player etc. etc.

Can the PS1 be used as a standard Windows soundcard in this way?

In Control Panel/Sounds & Multimedia/Audio I see two choices for Sound Playback & Recording - Creamware Play/Rec 01 and 02.

Am I right in thinking that Play/Rec 01 would select the analogue In/Out and Play/Rec 02 would select the SP/DIF In/Out?

If I select either and click on Volume it gives the error "There is a problem with your sound hardware. You may install mixer devices from the Add/Remove Hardware Wizard in the Control Panel"
If I click Advanced I get another error "DirectSound settings not available"
Either way I get no mixer available nor Volume Control in the Tool tray

Irrespective of the above problems when (if) I finally get it to work do I have to load SFP just to use the PS1 as a standard Windows soundcard?

I also want to connect my PowerSampler 1 to my mixer. The mixer takes 6.35mm mono jacks.

I have no problem with the output from the PS1 as a stereo jack->2 x mono jack adaptor or cable will be required to feed both L & R inputs on the mixer.

However into the PS1 stereo jack input I want to feed a mono output from my mixer.

Can I just connect a single mono-mono jack from the mono out on the mixer?
WIll this feed both L/R inputs on the PS1 at the same time?

I would prefer to do it this way as it then keeps things simple until I can get my head round everything!

Also regarding the DSP loading - when I load SFP3.1c I load the STM1632 mixer, STS3000 sampler and I see I also have ASIO source and destination loaded amongst various outputs.
I also load the DSP meter so I can keep an eye on loading etc.
Now 2 of the 3 SHARCS are showing @ 75% load - the third is showing 10% load.

Will this loading increase when I start to load up samples into the STS3000 or does the current loading reflect the max usage of the sampler module?

I would like to buy the Vocodizer but I guess with the DSP usage as it stands I will not have enough horsepower - according to the info in the Creamware shop...

Anybody who uses the Vocodizer care to comment what cannot be done with the 3 DSP PS1 and how it performs?

Might just have to trade in my PS1 for the Pulsar 2  - am I right in thinking this does all the PS1 does (and more) but with twice the DSP horsepower?

Thanks & regards,

hi Glyn,

last thing first: basically that's right, a Pulsar 2 has twice the horsepower, but the software package may vary, afaik the STS 3000 is included.
Don't worry about allocation of DSPs. The system does it automatically and reliably.
The initial load of the STS 3000 is 16 stereo voices = 32 mono, which moves the DSP meter quite a bit.
You may set the number of voices manually to the amount needed to spare some power.
The STS has a nice online doc, check it out, it spares a lot of hazzle as the thing isn't exactly self-explanatory.
If you don't have the right adapter to feed the mixer's mono into both inputs you may easily 'short-circuit' the 'analog-input' device in the routing window

have fun, Tom
