Hello All,

I haven't stopped in and I wanted to say that I've finally gotten something to work right in my life. I recently sold my rig and I wanted to not bash CW products. I just found something different. Thanks for all your help and everything.

If you're curious I bought a Roland VS-2480. I've found the portability of that system and the stand-alonish system helps with my recording needs a little better. It never crashes and that's an added plus. With the 2480 I still get my waverform editing with out the VST crashes.

I also bought a Roland XV-5080 interfacing directly with the 2480 through Roland's R-Bus. I've loaded it with memory, SRX cards and JV cards. I have lots of east sounds. I also bought a couple more sample CD's to broaden the palet in the drum market. Those real drum sounds are hard to come by but I found em. I like Roland's Piano SRX card too. Nice. Not Bad.

I've went back to SONAR to synch with the 2480 and do my sequencing on there happily!

I just miss some my analogue stuff. I'm thinking about another box, like the external Creamware machine. I bet it doesn't crash. Hmmmm......

Cool beans! Glad you found what works!

I've managed to get my CW+Emagic+Steinberg to work merrily; it took me a while but I think the military training paid off - discipline and patience (and I've learned a lot!). Although in this industry you've got to deal with deadlines and the technical know-how just in case you need an emegency contingency plan if things are going for shots! That's the art of balancing everything as it comes with being the best producer/engineer.

It's a good thing I don't do this for a living, yet...

My wife is ripe with child. The due date is end of Decemeber. I've pretty much bagged the studio back to the house for the remainder of the year and I'm going to work on a couple of personal projects.

I have a new resume to build and the studio needs a definate face lift. Look out in 2003. I'll be dangerous then and definately in the groove after getting over a new learning curve.

Oh yeah,

We already have a 529 accont for my first son who's now 19 months. I hope that he'll be rich beyond his wildest dreams as those accounts accrew.

More importnatly with the planning, as any good project studio owner will confess, having two sons will include free slave labor. I will have two built in studio techs to set up, take down and manage projects with me. I'm looking forward to that.

I just spent the morning down at the studio as a matter of fact and the little guy tried his best to help. It was great.

Did I mention that I've finally found the sound I've been looking for. That's often a hard thing to do as a musician. I found a great piano sound in the Roland SRX-02 Piano card. Nice. Really nice and feasible. I don't have to boot up my computer and load a sample for 2 minutes to play it. Additionally, their SRX drums are taking the same effect on me. Best money I've spent in a while on staple items. That's functional meat and potatoes. Although the real thing is always better this not only puts the parts in the ball park but definately put it in the game. Cheers to you all as well.

I'm still thinking about the Noah. Anybody here bought one?

There you go! Nothin' like family biz!

I've had my Roland JV1080 + Orchestral + Techno boards for a while. I do think that Roland has got one of the best sounding piano samples out there - even the stock! I also have a Triton Rack, the only dissapointment I have with it is that most of the "accoustic" samples isn't that great at all?! Other than that, the drums/percs, and synth pads are awesome! I'm thinking of exchanging my JV1080 for an XV5080 but maybe just save my $ for Samplitude 6.5, and a 2nd 36GB 10K rpm U160 HD. Oh yeah, that Oakley X Metal Juliet Ice Polarised specs is nice, too -$$$!

At any rate, I hope your new setup will be your best ever, yet!

im thinking of buying an standalone recorder aswell, how do you find the record quality of Roland VS-2480 compared to pulsars?

Well I don't want to bash Creamware. It did what it was supposed to do but my problem was integrating my Pulsar into a slew of other digital gear. Further more I was using Yamaha O1V's as the front end and although they were nice, I enjoy the quality of the Roland's significantly more. As my ideal project front end though I have to admit that I like the Joe Meek stuff on my budget. It's the best bang for the buck at that price range and I really like the warmth of a tube sound. I used to be a solid-state kind of guy till a friend brough his Joe Meek to a session once---that made a world of difference.

As for the difference in the sound, well, a 24-bit wave file is a 24-bit wave file. Same old same old. I'd have to say the only real advantage to the Roland is that it doesn't crash and I don't get VST errors ever! Furthermore, it's reasonably fast like a PC and has digital wave form editing. Roland makes nice effects that are comparible to other professional systems but have thier own flavor. Roland's stuff on a whole sounds bright even if its flat. I think they make it that way on purpose. If you have a really sibilant vocalist that can create ''ssssssss'' problems as well. If you're doing Rock or Pop or country, that works out great. Other styles of music you'll have to go into EQ hell.

I like having a screen to edit my junk in. I like the 5080 because I can RBUS my tracks in and shortly I'll buy an RBUS card from M-audio to fly tracks into Cakewalk off o' my IDE-RAID. I should be able to double up my editing times with two tech's (my wife and I) and be able to flatline a drum kit in no time at all.

My only real complain about the 2480 is that Roland only put 8 microphones on there when they should have put 16. I would have settled for 12 but currently I'm considering 8 channels of the new Dual Joe Meek----ahhh my Nirvanah!` That would provide me with exceptional compression and tone right into the box. Drum kits would sound like they were recorded at Nashville, NY or LA. Peacefull, but expensive.

Well, I'm rambling. I should get back to editing these MIDI files. I'll post a link soon as I get some of the tracks redone. They should be great sounding at least right?

Well an update on my VS-2480 switch.

I'm fully entrenched in the product now. I've found out that some of their OS issues aren't as flexible as a computer but still extremely functional in terms of recording.

I've not yet been able to get it to crash running the mix through the paces and I've learned to mix in 5.1, and do fully automated mixes on board. It's a nice machine.

I have discovered one flaw of the VS-2480 that every one here should know about, something about signal spikes in the microphone pre-amps introduces distortion even though the meters aren't peaking out. The work around for this is called the Falcon Crank and it seems to work great---you distort the pre by cranking it on boot and then those spikes don't create distortion in your mix. At first I thought it was my meteres and me but after talking with their users group its a common flaw. The real work around is new pre-amps which I'm still working on---maybe those Joe Meek's for my tax returns next year.

Well, I've completed most of the tracks for my new project and will post a link here for all to check out. I hope that you enjoy it as much as I have.
