Should I sell my outboard, or . . . . . . ?
Hi I also posted this on the CW forum, but to reach a bigger audience:
I use my pc (Asus TUSL2-C, P III 1Ghz, 512Mb RAM, Matrox G400 32Mb video card with 19" and 21" displays, 2x40Gb Seagate harddrives) to make music and I allready have a Creamware PowerSampler and Luna soundcard, both with the 8x8 breakoutbox, this gives me 20 analogue I/Os. I just ordered a Pulsar XTC to complete my setup. This will give me 12 DSPs in total for making music. I use my Yamaha CS1x for sounds and as MIDI controler, so that will do just fine.
I'm also a happy Logic 5.2 (almost 5.3 !) user, which brings me to the following question:
Should I sell my Casio CZ101, Korg DW8000, Korg Poly800 synths, Lexicon Alex , Zoom 1201 FX processors and Behringer MX2442 mixing console, so I can buy Logic control ?
I like the synths and FX supplied with Creamware's SFP alot and I think I will have enough SFP sound sources, but on the otherhand, I like the knobs of my Behringer, the sound and feel of the older synths like of my old Korgs. But then there still is this noise.
Just out of interest, what would you do ?
Any suggestions ?
Regards
Ronald

I haven't used an outboard effect at all since getting Pulsar. So I would think you could part with those easily.
As far as your synths are concerned, that is a decision you will have to make based on budget and personal needs. I always tend to regret selling instruments. It always seems somewhere down the road, I wished I had kept them. But that's just me.

I think your synths are not replaceable. Also the knobs and sliders at your Behringer mixer.
To avoid noises from your synths - take the gate S from creamware and try out how high the treshold must be. I use 3 gates in my projects to kill the noises from my Korg 05R/W, Yamaha MU90 and Roland XV-3080. The treshold is always around -75 dB. Don't set the release too short.

I guess it has to do with when you entered the production game.
I started out with only a PC and some basic progs then built up the PC into a powerful DAW. I still buy those plugs that impress me and that I fell are of a high emnough quality.
BUT I am finding myself buying more and more external hardware (synths & grooveboxes not effects, I find the effects on CW as good as is necc.) cos I love the hands on use and the sound qual is always first rate. I am however buying NEW gear and not having to tolerate the nuances of some of your stuff.
Thing is that nealry all the guys I know who use to produce in studios ARE scaling back to PC only configs....
Go figure!?!?

it's a cycle.when you have spaghetti everywhere it's nice to clean it up by selling everything.then when you get bored of the same old, same old,you start missing the old same and then have to buy stuff to litter the studio.
15 years in a used music store, and i've seen several of these cycles in the populace.

Ronald,
You definately should sell Korg DW8000. How much do you ask for it

I decided to never sell another piece of outboard gear after I sold my Ensoniq Mirage years ago. Every gizmo you add to your rig adds extra flavour to your sonic pallette. If you've got the space, I agree with the others here that you should hold on to your synths. What might seem obsolete in light of recent purchases could turn into a real gem later on!
Well guys I think I . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . keep my stuff and give it another whack, to see how to get rid of the noise is a real challenge and I just mighte buy Logic Control after all, as soon as I get my Christmas bonus maybe.
thanks dudes for the wise advice.
But when I'm selling, I'll post it here first.

hi Roon,
as you only wanted to sell some of the equipment to raise some cash the CZ 101 might be a good candidate. In Germany those are completely overpriced at the moment, I've seen them on ebay up to 350 €.
When I started music on the PC they were 30-50 €
The regular sized keyboard CZs have the same sound, the rack VZ10 is said to sound a bit smoother, but is more versatile to program.
Any of them should be less than 100 € if you don't wanna miss the sound.
cheers, Tom

Don't get rid of your hardware yet. Yes they do take up some space, but every now and then I turn one or two on just "feel" the sound of the music that I grew up listening to. Corney I know, but the moment you sell one, you'll be back buying it again. I've bought my DW8000 4 times now, should have learned the first 2 times.
Also, the Casio VZ and CZ sound very different from each other. I own both the CZ101 and the VZ8M, and the CZ has more punch, with the VZ sounding more mellow. The VZ has much more in the terms of programming, but I think Casio sat in on a Yamaha course when they designed the OS. It's a mess, and even worse on the rack modules. Think Roland gear is a pain? Just wait... (actually all my roland gear is pretty decent, until I mess with the D-550, then I begin to pull my hair a bit) Best rackmount 80's synth to program? Hands down goes to the Ensoniq ESQ-M. Brillant interface...
I'd never sell my hardware, but it does get a pain to dust every now and then. Can't help it though, I'm a gear whore.

It was 5 years ago when I found the CZ in a shop, still brand new with the original price tag (1400,- guilders (= €650,-) I think it was) on the box. I paid around €35 or €50 I believe. No to bad I think. On 2002-09-18 16:42, astroman wrote:

But like I said I'll keep my stuff.
Let's continue this topic, and post what you wouldn't sell, even if you're realy skint ?

If I had to sell a piece of gear, it would be one that I have at least 2 of the same kind of synthesis structure. I've collected a bunch of synths over the years when they fell out of favor for the latest wizz-bang synths with all the features. So far I've got synths that cover subtractive, additive, FM, phaze distortion, LA synthesis, analog drums, PCM drums, digital VA, combo PCM and subtractive, and all PCM waves. I'm sorely missing Transwave synthesis - anybody got a Wavestation or PPG they want to sell?
The first thing I would sell would be my effect boxes, as I use the computer to add EFX now, it's easier to sync up the LFO's on the various chorus and phazers. Correct timing of the delay is also a bonus. Second thing I'd sell would be my ROM'pler boxes, just becuase having raw synthesis is much esier to deal with than the limited waves of a ROM'pler. That and my sampler takes over anything of that nature now.
Chris
Seriously, anybody wanna get rid of that dusty old Wavestation you've got laying in your rack? How about that dead Fizmo in the corner...
