Hi folks, I´m just curious what you guys think are the best three sounding albums. I´ve read in a different thread that some of you even hear "Blue Oyster Cult", so I got curious. I know we all could list 10-20 albums and please feel free to do so if you prefer...

Best to ya´all

Beatles - Sgt. Pepper
Pink Floyd - Dark Side Of The Moon
Boston - First Album
Todd Rundgren - A Wizard, A True Star
Steve Hillage - Motivation Radio
Miles Davis - Bitches Brew

Pick three. If you're talking about sound/production values, I think these albums raised the bar but we should also give credit to Les Paul.

Janet Jackson - RhythmNation 1814
Michael Jackson - Dangerous
Prodigy - The Fat Of The Land

+ some of my own productions offcourse, but I'm not so shameless that I'm gonna mention them here

What a difficult question! I need to think for a while... But you are ferering to SOUNDING best, don't you? One of the best sounding groups ever is Pink Floid and lately, Pat Metheny Group.

BTW, never ever heard something so incredible well done as a Pat Metheny concert, I could not believe it was life!

I don´t know if this is one of "my best 3 albums" but is a CD to listen again and again...
It was recorded by 80 years old musicians in Habana, Cuba and mixed in London... (Compay Segundo, Eliades Ochoa, Ruben Gonzalez, etc)...When they do a live show, everybody go to listen because "that can be the last show"...

It is the soundtrack of the "Buena Vista Social Club" movie (1997 +/-)...

It is simple INCREDIBLE, and the best thing is that is recorded in "the old way"... all together, playing with natural reverbs...

Name of the album: "Buena Vista Social Club"
Published "NONESUCH" 755979487-2

'Buena Vista Social Club' were huge once, and I enjoy listening. 'The Wailers' were huge once. 'A Tribute to the Stooges' with the Asheton brothers. I saw them a while ago and was not very impressed. They've become icons, doing what they're expected to do. I owe them all great respect though, for what they've done in the past.

One of my current best mixers would sure be Laurent Garnier, which as a cliché is, to me, the godfather of techno. I can never get enough of Crispy Bacon. Tragically he's suffering of hearing loss due to musical overload, and is allowed only to do very little performances. Luckily for me, 10daysoftechno has a good relation with him and he still performes there.

The Beatles will be next on my list, but they had the means for mega productions. They rented the whole London ... Orchestra for backings if they felt like. They say it's recorded on a simple 4track, but I have no idea of their mixers and tables

Orbital has made the coolest electronic sounds ever. These guys know how to operate their machines and how to make a crowd follow their trip.

These jump in my thoughts for now, might change if I've thought a bit more profound about it  Enjoy the weekend.

Really interesting..... I think that also explains the outcome of the "what music do you make thread" some time ago. Regardsless of the reputation our Creamware platform has, people seem to make and hear all kinds of different stuff. My point goes along the lines whith potential purchasers of Creamware products being confused whether they belong to the target group or not. Just like I was 1+1/2 years ago. I always thought (in the past) that Creamware was only bought by tekno people until I was proven wrong in the "what music do you make" thread... Yes, I should have differenced between "best sounding" and "favorite" albums I guess..

Personally I also got influenced by a wide range of different artists and producers....starting whith Deep Purle, Rainbow, Zeppelin, ZZTop and so on, but also a lot of Jazz orientated stuff... Chat Atkins whith Les Paul playing "brazil" is one of my favorites. But Al Di Meola/Pat Metheny were always my favorite guitar players and "Corea" has always been my favorite piano player, but I do also hear and mix/master classical and Pop stuff. Michael Jackson´s "dangerous" is definitly a great sounding album, and so is Peter Gabriel´s "So". The way some of you discribe "Buena Vista Social Club" reminds me that there should be nothing between you and the music. I always try not to forget that when I mix something... I´m invited to a wedding this weekend (it´s been only my 2nd wedding party) but I wish you guys a nice weekend too and thanks for the respons!

Bernhard

I give up on supplying a whole list, but one album I just can't stay away from mentioning is "Upstairs at Eric's" by Yazoo (Yaz for you guys on the North American continent) because that one never goes out of my play list.

I guess its a lot because its my kind of music, but I also like to believe that it's a good example of that electronic music can be rather expressive and alive - and with quite simple means. Alright, it's not just the electronics - Alf does a pretty good job in complementing the noise from Vince.

Not sure if this fits in this thread, but I just had to say it... ;o)

For a "timeless" sound I like:

Devo: Are We Not Men?
Kraftwerk: Trans Europe Express
Sex Pistols: Never Mind the Bollocks

* Just had to add the best electronic album ever: John Foxx "Metamatic"

If there may only be three, and the decision
should be made of technical and "sound-artistic" choice, mine three are:

1. Peter Gabriel - So
2. Seal - Human Beings
3. Massive Attack - Mezzanine

But, hell, there are lots of great sounding albums, and even on some of them the music itself sucks.

I really like the way Björk and her Producers experiment with many cool ideas.

For "nice-sounding" stuff, well, try listen to some Prince records. How the hell does he gets so much buttom without mud? And ofcourse Michael Jackson albums allways sounds absolutly awesome.

I also really like the sound on the album "Pop Pop" by Ricky Lee Jones (and her other records sounds exelent too).

But when I listen to music, the actual overall sound (the mix) is not of GREAT importance. Early records by Billie Holiday, Bob Marley & The Beatles... well, from todays standards (talking about clarity and so) they are a little behind... But the music, soul AND sound of these old folks, is just so 90% "better" than anything that is made now.

The point is : if you have a gift or a great message, it doesn't really matter if your vocal track needs a little more treble.
Yours truely
