Making an Equalizer in SDK 7 (building, presets, etc)

Post by spacef »

it's the most boring video, you may not survive, I did not edit much, more or less live and improvised....
Good luck :-)

Part 1: building
https://youtu.be/QF810Om0vKg

Part 2: Presets
https://youtu.be/vfpm8Ia3M70

NB: may sound bad (hiss) because uses the cheapest behringer card to record the audio (scope to behringer through audio jacks) and the behringer is noisy (at leats its headphone output has a lot of hiss, and the preamps where audio is plugged in are not great at all, no headroom).

The clearest use/move/edit explanation yet.
It's been a long time stumbling block, yet now seems nearly obvious and understandable.
A 💯 thanks

did you survive :-)
I tried to index the videos but ran out of time.
I should make something with less digressions and focussed on a single device, quicker etc...
let me know (synth or effect ? )

Due to the sunny weather, I started with tutorials today. As I watch some clicks several time, my progress is pretty slow, but I learned a lot.
That circuit-surface-circuit switch and the difference between empty FX and synth was good to known.
The only difference I came accross yet, was a requester when exporting from folded view. It appears when I try to get the export menu.
As export works anyway, I ignored it.

I'm stuck at 11:52. I can see the lowest level in circuit as in the video. But when switching to surface, there is nothing.
Of course, I can say "open panel" to one of the folded EQs to get the EQ interface. But it doesn't get the dotted line and remains always visible.
What did I miss ?

If you can open the panel with a context menu, it means that there is panel inside the module.

Now, if you go inside this module, select Surface Mode, and see nothing, it generally means that the panel is out of the screen or behind something (one of the scope pad panel, project explorer or other scope window).

If a module is out of screen, therout of screen.

Otherwise, try with a new EQ module , freshly loaded into scope, and check its panel in surface mode (as there was not much manipulation, that new module might be placed where it should be).

Let me know if it helped.

for this, I confess I don't know / am not sure . I would need to experience it to be sure. In general it is related to graphics saved in the wrong way, or something that has not been made correctly (for example, saving part of a graphic group that should not be saved that way). In very rare cases, it may work but may contain a bug that reveals itself annoyting later. But I do not know for sure.

By "export" do you mean "saving" ? the term "export" is particular to pads that you "export" ie make visible and connectable on the upper level.

I'm back on track.
The missing panel was very much on the left. I had my projectwindow to low to see the lower scrollbar.
The export-menu with that requester was the "Export Pad" in the folded view. If i call the same menu now, no error requester shows up and it looks like in the video. So my journey can continue :)

Ah yes, the export is in the context menu, right... got confused too :-)

By the way, you can select a pad in the pad list, by clicking on it, then press the "e" key to export the pad, and "e" key again to un-export it. useful mainly with module with many pads to export (one would select a pad in the pad list, then go "e", arrow down, e, arrow dow, e, arrow down... etc until all pads are exported). not useful when you have just a couple of pads to export.

Small report for today: It was hard to survive 30:40, where I failed to select the background for 15 minutes. I mostly selected the curve or grid.
While ctrl-Z seems to work for Undo in Move-mode, it doesn't seem to exist in Edit-mode. "Save often" was a lection of Leisure Suit Larry and SDKedit mode seems to be coded by the same spirit :)
The miracle of realignment of curve, grid and background by saving and reloading the device was the perfect break for today.

OMG ctrl+Z does work when moving stuff around (on panels in surface mode, as well as moving modules in circuit mode)... you taught me something, I never noticed... not a full "undo" for circuit though, it does not undo connection, nor restore module that were deleted... seems to work only for moving stuff around.

A workaround is to load a new eq module and try to edit its display. then copy/paste that one to the device you are working on.

Why graphic of the EQ become stuck is a ystery, but it is generally not permanent.
May be change the state of the surface (like from edit to move mode and edit again) or change level and come back to the graphic.
Or even, click on an empty area of the project window and try to edit again the curve display.
at some point it becomes "unstuck". But if you need to insist and loose time, try editing a new eq curve as saif previously.

I made my way until the end ! At some stage, I opened a second project window to have circuit and surface at the same time. Although I saved project and device regulary, after a reboot of my PC, the device was missing features, while later features where there. Maybe I managed to mess this up by two project windows ? (Your hint at the second video, to make sure not to open a prior version was a perfect fit for my situation :)
Parameters section also gave me mystic moments, when "open" didn't open the little window on the upper left. Like in the video, the parameterwindow titles "uknow 007" at the beginning and changes to "equalizer" after reload.
As a summary, your video helped a lot, as SDK requires some clicks, which my personal logic wouldn't expect.
So 50% is the knowhow what to click, but 50% is the strategy to recover from unexpected situations.
It took me about 4 hours, as I often used the pictured button in VLC:

I am not sure the second project window causes such bug. I think that it happened to me too while making the Rodin EQ but cannot explain why, and prefered going forward and redoing and completing the device. I've had these kind of issues a lot in my DAW, when I open a song and had to re-do work I did the day before (or was convinced I did it more than once)... this happened a lot while finishing the last EP. I tend to blame it on gremlins or aliens, I am not yet too sure :-) May be I should remove my Kapersky ... Or may be it is a windows hidden AI thing... seriously, I do not know why but I think that it does happen and it is super weird.

In any case: congratulation for completing the tutorial, it was a hard one :-)
