in the SP3 for 2K you have this:

"The OS Product or OS Components contain components that enable and facilitate the use of certain Internet-based services. You acknowledge and agree that Microsoft may automatically check the version of the OS Product and/or its components that you are utilizing and may provide upgrades or fixes to the OS Product that will be automatically downloaded to your computer."

So pretty much when you install SP3 for Win2K your giving up your box! and you agreed to it !

Well I'm pretty sure the XP update T&C will have the same thing in it,

If it does I will NOT be installing the SP1 for XP when it's final....

What's this coming to? pretty soon there could be clauses like Anything you do or create or invent while using this OS is ours not yours!

After installing a few new services are added (and running):
"Automatic Updates"
"Background Intelligent Transfer Service".
Just put them on "Manual" and nothing weird will happen. (apart from the usual...)

Isnt this just a way of them saying they can look at your drivers and telling you you need an update if so.They already do this if you have automatic update set to on.
Sounds harmless to me.Upgrades to XP will let you switch of Outlook express IE,so you will have the choice.
If they don't say that it will be illegal
Legalities thats all.

this, of course, is what the struggle is about:
life is FOR people.it is theirs.everyone.some want to pretend that others don't have a right to it or the right to live it themselves, without undo stress.but as all are the same creature,to cause hurt is to hurt one's self.there is no shortage of anything.everything's made of dirt, transformed by mathematical processes.it's here before and after man and man himself is that same dirt.

damn m$, relax!

can't stop this one from living...

Although in some places there's a lot of hate against Microsoft, I don't think they're an enemy at all!

They're restricted by the same laws as we, and the laws pretty much turn out as our creations that turned against us and need be renewed.

Microsoft f.i. was not allowed easily to build the Defrag-Tool into their own OS! If they would be allowed to make their own Virus-Scanner, that would be great for me, because it naturally would be the best, but: it's not allowed. And so on.

I'm personally greatfull for the updates: you can switch that off easily, I bet they mainly had to justify themselves before some law to let this possibilty be; I think it's a fascinating, even necessary feature, when you think at 'Snowwhite and the Dwarfs'...

There's something much bigger than Microsoft and the natural dynamics of a corporate form that wants to stay alive and expand and dominate no matter what  - in that regard, that says you've got to earn the right to live on this planet. A thoughtform that enslaves. And: this thoughtform sadly lives inside us a long time: I just begin considering that it might be a lie! Hard to accept it.

The only war is inside and against ones own stupidity, to quote Castaneda (on 'church')...
'You need complete acceptance of yourself first and then you can accept what you want to accept into your reality.'(some Guy.)

Cook, your way of thinking reflects mine, and I'm happy about that. Because the only thing the enemy can do to control us is having us believe that the obstruction to happinness and success and illumination is something outside of ourselves. Once someone believes this, he/she's so absorbed fighting the outer circumstances, conditions, people, corporation, etc. that little is done to remedy the real cause of all pain, which lies within the individual's own feelings and thoughts. When the attention is on outer things, it cannot be held upon the Higher Instance of Life which is the ONLY PLACE from where can come true and eternal liberation from the chains of doubt and the throes of fear. And as long as people will put the responsibility of their unhappinness and limitation upon anything else than their own feelings and thoughts, how in the world will they be free?
Nothing forces us to continue on the same path but our own conviction that there is no other path! That is both tragic and magnificent, because it contains the problem AND the solution, for One Law is acting at all times, immuable. It takes determination to break old habits, but once it is done, oh my, what a relief!
Be at peace.

As long as Microsoft keeps to the OS folders, I don't mind. But hackers know how to get to those and intelletual properties are at stake(maybe)...

Ok, that was paranoid of me

Im happy to see people think as deep as me.I thought the world is full of greedy people and I'm one of few that just wants a little luxury and peace, and I don't want it all!
Think of Microsoft pc structure compared to apple.
Apple is one operating system and things will only work one way for Mac which makes there sofware even more expensive than MS.
Look how many different variations with MS we have.MS just dominate this OS market, the more 3rd parties involved the more difficulties the OS will run into slowing it down. It's best to have one president not ten.Too many cooks......
Like Bob Dylan said whoever you are you have to serve somebody!

ah,yes romans.mr dylan was close.whatever you are......

also the right to live need not be earned by the living.however a non living entity that wants to become a real boy(a corporation) must earn life by having a good heart and compassion for humans.

the current model(survival of the fittest,a corruption of the truth:survival of that which fits) loves not life.it only loves an abstraction(being an abstraction itself and not real)which leads to devices which enslave rather than enable.

m$ need not grant themselves full legal access.they only need to have an agreement for those who wish their aid.the fact that they grant themselves full access in any event shows their disrespect and bad intentions.that said, they are not doing anything out of the ordinary for money and power.it's all legal and what could be expected from the greedy.

THAT said,i'll go on happily USING this stuff. see, i went from free man to user, the word for drug addicts, in the blink of an eye.........

it's 1948.

Small people with low esteem using power to put down what they could never be.

Someone has to have the power,it's an institution we can't escape, but Utopia will never be.
