One important reason was, M$ needs the competition, to avoid measures against a monopoly situation.

We are making rich men even richer by paying for their software/hardware. There is a new movie called "Steve Jobs" that should be out very soon. It looks at Steve in a different way than what everyone thinks he is... I will probably see it.

I can overclock but I do not have a water cooler. I do have a special large heatsink. I'm a little worried about the risk. That is why I never tied it plus I am pretty happy with my performance. It's an i7 but an older, slower one.

You're gonna need a water cooler and an unlocked chip. It's practically impossible to do it with a locked chip, because you're raising the bus frequency and it screws up the timings of all other things. If you're satisfied with the performance, don't worry about it! Just stay stock. I am doing this just as an experiment in my spare time.

Oh yeah, 48 hours stable with Vcore 1.35 at 4.6Ghz. 4770k. I'm gonna run it for a few more days maybe

I think she's stable, guys. I had to stop it cause I sold an UAD-2 Duo card to free up a slot for the MIDI plate I'm making for Scope Pro. Yes, all my slots are taken up

Yeah, it is. I am reinstalling all the Scope plugins that I own and all the VSTs. A whole lot of fun! But at least my computer is clean now

I only run at 44.1k and it's usually pretty stable.

I buy "locked" chips and bump them from 3.4 to 3.8/4.0.
This kicks up the bandwidth on the CPUs cache.
80GBps goes to 100GBps (duplexxed).
Got the Xeon with Iris Pro and 128MB L4 cache.

Noticed I could only run a few Native time based FX before the
CPU cores started spiking randomly.
Now theres no spikes.

Yeah, I don't think you can get unlocked Xeons Those are server processors.

I can change the cache ratio on my unlocked chip, but I won't since it seems to be pretty stable right now. Don't mess with a good thing, this thing is already 1.1GHz over stock! The Diva is loving it! DSP is still the best though...

Even on my i7 3770S or i7 4790S versions that were locked I took them to 4GHz no sweat.....

Well its 64bit Rock & Roll stable.
I use 4 x 22k supermicro duallys and a Dynatron 1U HSF.
My 1U is as loud as a vacuum cleaner.
Case temps 31C. CPU Temps 39C.
Outdoor gigs in 105 degrees this summer caused a reboot once.
Since then I added the 3rd and 4th 22k fans.

Never run gamer toture tests or anything.
If it takes my workflow for 48 hours its stage ready for me.

Good point. But I wanted my computer to be quiet, so my fans are at the most at 50% speed and I can slow them down even more. I'm using huge fans! The noisiest fan in my desktop is the tiny whiny fan on the Quadro FX 1700. I realize that you cannot water cool a 1U rack case. You can barely fit a computer in there! But you do live gigging, I just jam at home when I'm bored

We actually have way more hardware power than we can use.

While gamers push forward development for fps us audio guys dont have enough clout to make DAW developers make thier own OS or at least streamline ASIO.

My latest NVMe rig reveals the same ASIO deficiencies as I experienced using cheap ass MX100 SSDs.

ASIO craps out after so many MIDI tracks with real time overdubs.
So I go buy a pair of Intel 750s.
Same problems.

So I end up with 50% of RAM used.
40% of CPU.
25% of memoery sub system bandwidth.
30% of DSP.

Scope DSP is the only hardware left I can push harder.
ASIO can run at its maximum using the cheapest RAM cheapest SSDs and
an i5 CPU instead of the i7s.

My next build will be incredible cheap.
