The Nature of God

Post by Nestor »

> This is a classical work attempting to express the feelings experienced by human beings facing up the Divine, this kind of mystical state of mind a person without religion but directly through his own heart, experiences when meditating about love, life and God. Enjoy…

Nice ideas! More in my musical taste! I have a few comments, but first, can you tell me how you did that music? (Which sampler, sounds, etc.)

I can’t remember well cos I did id quite a long time ago, about 4 years ago it was my first try with Pulsar. I remember to have used many different samples here: Some nice strings from the Pulsar sample CD others rather ordinary coming from Computer Music magazine. Some are from some links given in the net and some have been created from the Korg X5, my present outboard keyboard which is very nice despite the fact that it is a very old synth now. But I still like its sounds. To have a Triton must be something killing!

I know the average sound it is not “very” good, cos the samples aren’t either, but I’m interested in getting to know what do you think about the work itself rather than about the samples.

BTW: I’m remembering some other things now. Everything was played with the Sampler Players of the version 1.1 of Pulsar software. I’ve used 13 of them at the same time, no effects whatsoever cos I hadn’t any place left into my 4 sharks. I’ve spend many… many hours of working cos it was my first try and so it was very hard to find my way. The mixing and post-production work is rather week to my hears, but I didn’t know what mastering was all about, I would think it was to add a bit of reverb, maximising the sound a bit and that’s it. But now I know this is an IMPORTANT part of the process… Well, that’s it.

Hi ya Nestor,

This is nice if you like Delius!

As a serious criticism, I think your melody has no 'movement'. By that I mean the melody changes on the beat and so does the harmony. Where're the suspensions and the anticipations?

Its OK for a few bars, but not the whole way through, try going over the bar lines. Not so 'square', but maybe you meant it that way.

Not very valid criticism in a piece four years old though.

I don’t know Delius Robert, it’s a composer?

In fact, yes I wanted it that way, but I agree that it can be monotonous cos the central part in fact, uses the same melody structure as the first and last parts. Perhaps changing the middle part the rest of it would be just fine.

It’s a sharp perception of yours here. The kind of highlights anybody composing needs as criticism, thanks for it, it opens my mind for future composing.

I agree with Robert's comment, and I'll add a few, since I said I would...

I think that at some moments in the piece, there could be something which stands out of the whole, emerging from the background. I would have added some dynamic piano arpeggios when the melodic structure has been exposed enough and the listener's attention must be drawn to somewhere else. This would balance the thing and put something on top of what in the end sounds more like an accompaniment. Well, it sounds like that not because of its own characteristics but because of its repetitive "tapestry" exposition, if you see what I mean. Of course you could improve it by playing with the overlapping polyrythms in the strings and filtering/volumes contrasts, but my point is that you could put an image on top of that, make something happen -when it is appropriate.

Yes, in fact, what Robert said and your incoming ideas are a whole they complement each other. I’ve got your idea, sort of a layer or several layers coming in and out with the flow. Of course this would change completely the song into a more sophisticated, rich sound and the colour would not become tiresome, as it may happen here.

One of the problems I’ve got when doing it is that four sharks are far from enough DSP power. I would have liked to have more instruments at hand, but it was impossible.

Thanks very much for you comments, it helps me much for future works on orchestrations.

I think it's nice. Nevermind the details, I think the atmosphere as a whole works. There are a couple of strange chords in there that could be improved I think. Anyway, great tune. It's a morning tune. Too bad I'm never awake in the mornings. hehe.

The tune would probably work if everything was real. Though it would demand something from the players, the motif played with different expression would definitely liven up the tune. So as a composition, it's great. The rest is just a matter of execution. What a shame that my flute can't do half notes! (I wouldn't be able to keep up with the key changes)

Cheers Ken, but... one day we could nevertheless do something toguether with your flute for the melody and some orchestral work of mine  You can play only natural notes with it, can´t you? Just a try with something short. Would you?

hmm .... looks like I am going to become a regular member of this forum, I'm wll inpressed with the work and the critisisms.

Interesting .... your comment about sharcs and the samplers .... I'm looking to get the powersampler. I din't know they came with a sample-disk.

Anyway .....

.... I understand the comments about the four-square ness.

At the same time ... there's a lot of subtlety of chord progression ... Some of the changes are quite heart-rending. I could see the arpeggio going slightly further back in the mix [NB .... I'm probably where you were four years ago ... I'm still trying to get my head around the basics. ]

The progression of the feelings is very beautiful. Come to think of it ... I can get the holy aspect of it ... it's stately and light and dark at the same time. Some of those non-resolutions pose some pretty awesome questions.

Thanks for sharing.

Wow Zenda, there you surprised me! You really got the feeling! I’m surprised because your emotional description of the song is EXACTLY what I felt doing it… This is some intuition I would say… Than you.

Hi Nestor

Very nice music... I love it, personnaly i think your 'Mastering' is good like it is. It serve the song well, and ultimately, that's the goal i think.

No need to compress everything, natural sound is refreshing these days, and i like it with alot of dynamics. The sound is crisp and clean. My monitors render it very well. The full range of frequencies come directly in my body this way.

I found it is sending relaxing vibe, but at the same time gives me lots of energy and happiness.

Bravo!

Thanks Marcus for you replay. Well, I don’t know about the mixing really, I’m not longer sure about it cos there are people who would like it with more compression, and others without it, like you. If I were to do it again, it would be very different anyway.
Tell me please, what monitors do you use?

Well, yours are rather decent pair of speakers… I have two pairs together: the SRS-A60 from Sony, a very little couple of boxes that sound pretty well in the headroom side of things, and the YST-M100, a pair of nice quality speakers with nice middle and acceptable bass response. Putting them together I get a reasonable response to at least, reproduce the sounds with clarity. But… how much I would like to buy a couple of good Makies speakers… Ho yeaaa!
