SFP 3.1 + Logic Platinum 5.1.2 (newbie)

4 Issues:

Still learning Logic's behaviour.....

On Windows 98SE
- During launch, when initiaiting Wave Player, it takes a few minutes to complete (approx. <5min). I can go to the kitchen and cook a quick dinner and come back, and still initiating Wave Player?!

98SE and XP Pro
- During launch, (SFP 3.1 active on background as default on boot), Logic yields a message stating that XTC cannot be used while another Creamware application is running...

- Setting lower ULLI values seem to make ASIO unstable and yields those overload errors much more frequently.

- ASIO overloads, when dealing with screen refresh, windows movement...

CONFIGURATION:

Video setup (ATI Xpert 2000):
Win98SE = 1024x768/16bit
WinXP Pro = 1152x864/16bit

My SFP default startup project setting:
STM 2448 Mixer
ASIO24 Source (16-channel)
ASIO24 Destination 16-channel)
ADAT A Source
ADAT A Destination
No MIDI Source/Dest, no EFX, no synths, etc.

Hardware Mods:
USB is re-activated on BIOS for Logic's XSKey
Issue: USB is shared with PCI 4 & 5-which Pulsar II+ is on

D-Link530TX NIC on PCI 2
Issue: shared with AGP (disabled under 98SE)

Adaptec 29160 SCSI on PCI 3
Issue: none

BIOS Settings:
PCI Latency Timer = 32 (default)
USB is activated

What's the best "tweak" for this?

Anyway, With all these issues, I'm finding Logic very powerful and stable Pro audio Warez! Still a little cumbersome with managing my way around but getting there... Not too bad at all!

[ADDENDUM]
Can I get a Parallel version of the XSKey as what they used to use long ago? For this reason of deactivating the USB in BIOS so as to not share Pulsar II+ with another device.

AAAARRRGGGH!!!, Not another one, dump the linksys card, I've said loads of times that network card causes all sorts of hassle even when disabled!!!!

I don't like having a network card at all, but for now, the primary reason for having a NIC is to transfer all my work to another PC that I use for performing backup and archiving of all my data. I try to avoid using my Creamware PC for any other tasks other than audio recording. And, I don't want to over use my current SCSI CD-R as it is reserved for mastering with tripleDAT. As old as it is, if it goes, I can't find a replacement for it as CW ceased updating the CD-R driver library.

I know there are other CD burning apps but I just love the way tripleDAT precisely masters all my tracks on the same program! WYSIWYG!

So.....

Just saving up for another CD-R/W, an ATA66/100 tray and an LVD U160 tray. Then, I'll take the NIC off the board!

I have a NIC which is called Realtek under device manager. Occasionally i get lock ups. Could this be a prob of the NIC ? If so are there any network cards which work alongside pulsar withouts any probs ?

I was wondering the same... My NIC is only temporary until I get another CD-R/W or removable ATA100 and U160 tray to back up all my work. Otherwise, I'd much rather have my Audio PC to be just pure audio computer.

Go to "control panel"-->system"--> devises manager-->Pulsar driver...setting

change "input" and "output" to "1"...
then u can avoid "initi wave plaer" long time.

(2)

SFP 3.1 "setting" uncheck "XTC ENABLED"that message "stating that XTC cannot be used while another Creamware application is running" will be gone,if u wanna use XTC mode in SFP3.1,u have to turn off ur SFP backgroud first.

(4)

Find "system.ini" in "windows" folder,then find [vcache]:

MinFileCache=131072
MaxFileCache=131072
Rem by Logic Audio Platinum v5.10 Setup MinFileCache=131072
Rem by Logic Audio Platinum v5.10 Setup MaxFileCache=131072

It's my setting and my computer is 512 mb ram...131072 for 512mb ram.
I had same problem with u b 4 I change my vcache.
Right not I used SFP3.1 and xtc with Law 5.1...not bad.

Did all those and also some PCI shuffling:

PCI-1: Unused (shared with AGP)

PCI-2: Unused (shared with AGP)

PCI-3: Pulsar II+ (shared with PIC-6-unused)
WAS: PCI-5

PCI-4: DLink NIC (shared with PCI-5 & USB)
WAS: PCI-2 (shared with AGP)

PCI-5: Adaptec 29160 (shared with PCI-4 & USB)
WAS: PCI-3 (shared with PCI-6-unused)

PCI-6: Unused (shared with PCI-3, same space as ISA=populated with tripleBOARDII)

Although the CUBX is a good, stable board, the PCI sharing scheme can be very limiting...

I'm going to get another CD-R/W and a removable ATA66/100 bay and LVD bay. Then will remove the NIC card - finally, no more network!!!

Also:
Does an P-XTC card take up any resources? Just wanting to add more DSP to my Pulsar card and use it as a scaled down SRB.

This is weird I had a similar problem with fruityloops taking 5 minutes to boot. For some reaosn the problem went away after I switched the color mode to thousands in my pc.

Not true. If you read the readme.rtf of SFP, it explain that to avoid this behavior of the 'init wav player', you have to go at the same place, but you only have to uncheck the 'always open devices' if you're using Logic, and leave it checked if your using Cubase.

An epiphany! Whilst I was driving home from work, a thought came across my mind, Heck! why not a USB network solution!" Since I need USB active for the Logic XSKey anyway, why not use USB for networking as well! That will also eliminate my D-Link NIC off my board! Although USB NIC is only @ 11Mbsec, it's just fine with me!

Hopefully, this will stabilise everything!

USB Network is cool, it is what i have, a SMC EZ Ethernet USB 2202USB/ETH.

Cool, cuz, when you don't need it, just unplug. Since it's hot plug, you can also just plugin when needed.

Dagnabit! Why didn't I think of this before?! Yup! USB network is cool alright! I got a D-Link DSB 650TX. My board is free of NIC now!
Seems to run MUCH better! No more sharing PCI resources except the USB (embedded on mobo) and SCSI on PCI-5! Pulsar2 is isolated on PCI-3! Sometimes, playing with shared PCIs is half the battle! Let's see how things work now!

NIC is still disabled in Win98SE, But XP Pro, with all it has, runs as well as 98.

For the Wave Player Init problem at the launch of Logic, go in your soundcard properties and uncheck "Always Open Device". I solved the problem doing this.

For the Asio Overload problem, I siolved this problem (after tons of optimisation found on different forums ...) by desactivate the Serial Ports in the BIOS ...

Both my serial ports are disabled as well as the parallel port since Pulsar v3.01b.

I'm getting ASIO overloads whenever I [right click] on the task bar or drop down menus off Logic's Menus. As a new LP5 user, I'm still getting acquainted on its working paradigm. But, this is half the fun! I love a good challenge as I learn my stuff well afterwards!

A solution for the waveproblem is to put
unconnectet wavedevices in your sfp projet.

The asio overload was away since i use the
5.1.2 version of lap5. Just buy it because
now the 5.1.3 is out

The best solution for the asio overload problem is to change the cpu priority of logic. The easiest way to do this in XP/W2K is to open task manager and right click on logic 5 in the process list. You will then see a setting called "set priority", by default it is normal, change this to high.
Don't understand why emagic run logic in normal mode, because if you check Nuendo or Cubase, by default they are set to run in high, explains why people don't complain of overload problems in Cubase or Nuendo.

It's similar to task manager in XP/W2K, so you find the program in the list and change it's priority. Haven't got win98se to try it, so if it works you might like to report back here with the results.

Tried the program on one particularly problematic piece and it played without a hitch with High Priority set.

I wonder what the Real Time setting would do...
