Celmo Tape Echo Simulator - which device?

Post by ehasting »

Hello,

Does the Celmo TES emulate any hardware device, or is it purly fictional "based upon a true story" ?

it's similar to a Roland Space Echo, but it's the "based on a true story" type of echo.

The fact that it has 3 heads with control over each one's positioning is very cool.

yes, it sounds great, too!

it's not good for certain kinds of automated settings, for that the Mod4 tape delay is better because it's totally zipperless.

Wow, the price was rather nice!! not that 60 USD is killer expensive either (Uad Roland RE+201 is like 250USD) :).

Anyone have any light on why the Celmo is not being zipper-free? i would prefer using scope, since i am actually doing all my effect stuff in scope.
another alternative i guess is to get the modular 4 package and create a tape delay that way (but that is more costly).

To my understanding it's a Ram issue... but i might be wrong. I have never found a zipper free delay on scope except for the delay in mod4 (i have never heard it myself, since i dont own mod 4... actually i dont even use scope anymore). But with the Xite i'm sure we will see more zipper free delays, but since they exist in native land in abundance, i would just go that way.

Okay.. or worse.. the SDK atoms in use have some kind of interpolation problem, requiring new atoms..
but i dont have a clue how the scope sdk is build up.. i am just using words i have heard before on this forum :P

Anyway.. Celmo is getting my money..

However!! the platform has a bit challenge in the presentation of its plugin.. i wish sonic-core made their shop more like UAD, and Celmo went over to word-press or anything that looks a bit more 2012 :P

It will most unlikely improve the sound, or degrade the sound: but Celmo's page looks like a lot of the abandon pages from the 90's, which does not have any updates at all. That might be a problem for new hopeful users :).

the celmo tape echo is a very good tape echo simulation

i have not notice zipper noise so maybe its motherboard specific i use a p4 3.4ghz ram 4g winxp 32

its grate for dub and pads and for great depth for string synth sounds or choirs

If you turn the echo speed pot up/down you should get choppy sounds no matter what motherboard you are using - at least to my knowledge. :)

What about Celmo's vintage delay? I can't remember getting zipper noise.

+1.. My thoughts exactly! Celmo makes some of the best overlooked plugins ITB. I have not heard a Native or any other ITB Platform tape delay that has the clarity and depth of Celmo's. UAD's is characterful with alot more color but is not as good overall to my ears and unlike most plugins Celmo's Tape Echo protects the original source well and does not introduce alot of damaging and cheap sounding artifacts. The Spring Reverb from Celmo is awesome to as well as some of his other plugins.

Celmo is a developer that many people are asleep to and being on the SCOPE platform wich is niche adds to that. Might not have the fancy GUI's, fancy looking website, reputation for making high-end hardware, the glamour and Hollywood actors advertising his products but some of his plugins are great and stand the test of time as that. I really hope Celmo continues to develop for SCOPE and creates something new for XITE-1. Celmo did some awesome things with the very little dsp power of the old SCOPE PCI cards, i'm sure a XITE-1 with a new SDK would yield some very special things from Celmo. One of my top favorite developers no doubt!

agreed, Celmo's Tape Echo is one of my all time favourites (and possibly my most used effect of them all) :D
but it doesn't emulate a tape, it's made after a Meazzi (Binson) Disk Echo iirc...
he had something on his website about the model.
A cool abuse is to turn it up to insane bpm figures...
beyond 400 it starts to produce anything from early reflections to comb filters
(may save your day on a lame vocal track with low repeat settings)

cheers, Tom

Glad to wade in with the only piece of Celmo gear I have - his Sardine Can compressor pedal.

It's without doubt my favourite pedal. It is always in my chain. The rest of my effects (save a couple of distortion pedals) are ultimately forgettable - still have a few, out of nostalgia really, from happy days of gigging. Tried loads of compressors over the years, footpedal and rack, this has the perfect balance that brings out the best of both my guitars, and surprisingly my basses too, when the EQ'ing part (brown/violet setting) is off/flat. It really is the ideal frontend to recording guitars, both 4 and 6 stringed varieties.

I have to agree generally with what's been said. I would have hoped that there would be a professionally-presented website that showcased devices in a uniform manner - with a complete description of the device controls, links to sound clips referencing how the device was setup, with videos possibly, and a link to download the preset(s) used in the sound clips, and a link to the device's manual. Celmo's site is typical of the marketing position of all of Scope stuff - just not good enough. But it's not Celmo's fault... he should be supported by an infrastructure, not just an SDK! It's unfortunate that the only way to get information about pay-for devices is from this site.

It's not too too difficult nor expensive to get something classy up on a website nowadays - there are more than enough examples of fine sites on the web these days, some better than others. The psy-works.net site of free scope devices beats most/all of the Scope pay-for sites!
My experience with websites is those sites where it feels like there's been a bit of thought and money put into them means that clients find it easier to part with their own cash. Gotta spend money to make money. The sound quality doesn't speak for itself if the exposure isn't there.

And another thing - why aren't Celmo's devices listed on the sonic-core.net site? What other Scope device vendors are absent from sonic-core.net?!

Now I have Scope embedded as the centrepiece of my setup (where have you been all my life?!), I need to try Celmo's plugins!
Not because it is easy, but because it is hard...

actually I like those sites of Celmo and de-Vice (Ison) a lot.
there's so much fake polished stuff out there with all that photoreal bs... :P
afaik Celmo is a smart guy who makes a fair amount of bucks with other activities (video ?)
Scope is the enviroment with one of the best sounds, but one of the poorest income for 3rd parties.
that's a matter of fact and it's always been that way

only user can change that by their wallets... but hey...
if you HAVE everything you need, why should you buy more ?
that IS a serious problem...
so serious that it made even a giant like Apple trade their own developement for a stoneaged concept they once declared anachronistic by themselves

the better a system is, the less purchases you may expect after initial sales
there's no urge for people to change
and you won't urge other people to switch over to THIS system because it wouldn't change their workflow in a revolutionary way...
it may have a revolutionary sound, but does this really matter ? on the radio ? in the club ?
(ah sorry for the rant - wrong topic) :D

cheers, Tom

I understand. And I agree.

My point is not about garnishing the lily with some pzazz or a dash of cha-cha-cha.... Yes, I too don't like what marketing has turned into, exposes the soft underbelly of human nature.

My point is about unifying what's there in a uniform matter under one roof: not necessarily in a pretty way! But even 'Pretty' is pretty-easy nowadays...
Scope is a closed system, so it should have a (single) doorway for entrance. There are too many wandering avenues to access Scope info. Someone good at googling will find what they can get for Scope - it's more like chasing your tail getting info about some Open Source library than it is reflective of a significant investment. Planetz is a busy place for a reason!

I understand that it's a poor source of income for third-party devs. But I believe that it's not just the quality (breadth and depth) of the base offering that is cause for this - it's only part of the reason.

ScopeRise is a fabulous resource btw. And psy-works.net is a far better solution than the 'devices' posts on this forum.

Don't intend to hijack this post... I've had my rant - twice....
Not because it is easy, but because it is hard...
