Suggestions ?

Post by Rigo »

Hi folks,
I'm new to this forum, and also to Scope. Having fun with my modular (Eurorack), I wanted to use my computer to add some effects and also to record the horrible noises I make. First I was just using Audacity on my old Dell PC (GX270) with Yamaha SW1000XG soundcard, but then I switched to Reaper with an Alesis IO26 (via FireWire). My computer being old it wasn't always the smoothest experience ... So I started upgrading things: SSD as boot disk, 4GB of RAM, 3.2 GHz in stead of 2.4 GHz processor. And I also bought a Pulsar 2 with Lunabox (and a UAD-1). Now I'm trying to integrate everything ... and some questions pop up.

*) how hot does the Pulsar2 run ? The CPU I changed should have the same power usage as the one it replaced, but maybe the Pulsar asks a lot of power from the PSU what makes the fan go in overdrive, or just because the card itself gets hot and the inside of the computer needs cooling.
*) Can I use the Alesis IO26 and the Luna box at the same time in Reaper ? Scope is running in normal mode, maybe I have to try XTC mode ? I also tried with ASIO4ALL, but I only get the Alesis to choose from (even though Scope is recognized) [I also have to add that at first I tried with Scope 4.5 on Windows7 (32bit), but I upgraded to 5.1 and then found out that due to some error I cannot uninstall 4.5 ... so both are installed at the moment. Reinstalling the computer is an option, it goes relatively fast with the SSD 8) ]
*) Would the Lunabox be usable with SilentWay ? (in case I cannot use the Alesis at the same time) Don't have SilentWay yet, but would like to try it ...
*) If elements in the Scope project are not used (even though they are connected to other elements) do they still use some power from the Pulsar ? I presume it is best to make a standard project as small as possible fro my needs ...
*) I did use the UAD-1 with Reaper when the Pulsar wasn't installed yet, but is it possible to use both together ? Probably more a question about how to do the routing in Reaper ... so many things that are completely new to me.

All your suggestions and comments are welcome !

wow ... it's a little bit confused ... heu a nightmare ? :D

So, if you try to run 2 different audio cards with scope it's not a really good idea ...
Because scope (Pulsar) doesn't like very much to share the job with another interface :(

First : you should to try to run with only the pulsar and the UAD-1 and the lunabox (so you'll have 12 or more input/output, it's confortable to work). (Alesis will be installed after if all is right but you'll have difficulties to run with more than 1 soundcard because the daws recognyze in general only one interface).

It's my 2 cents.
Sonic Core Luna II + Pulsar II scope v5.1.2709-x64, Cubase 9.0.20 (64), Pro Tools 12.7, Wavelab element 9 (64), windows 8.1 pro (64), Asus P6T 18Go RAM core i7 920, SSL Duende Native - Lexicon PCM Reverb Bundle - Waves - Sonnox

I tried already just Reaper+Scope using the Luna box, it works as far as I am able to work with Scope (being a beginner) Still have to find my way in adding effects and such. What I did as well is use Reaper for some drums routed as audio to Scope, and some midi channels for synths in Scope ... works fine.
But I would like to use the Alesis because it is very convenient ... if the computer is switched of it still works as a mixer with predefined panning. Plus it contains attenuators that are really needed for the modular signal. (that's why I build a small passive box for the Luna, going from RCA to 3.5mm and from 3.5mm to RCA with attenuation (just a simple pot) ... works like a charm but the computer must be running to use the Luna. And also, the Alesis works with SilentWay (for passing CV and gate signals for the modular throught the audio interface) which I would like to test one day.
So I hoped that ASIA4ALL would save me, but at this point it doesn't ... but that might be due to first installing 4.5. Maybe when the weather cools down I just reinstall the computer, to warm in that room now 8)
As you said, quite confusing :D

You can ONLY run one version of Scope at a time, so either uninstall the earlier version or rename the older version folder.

ASIO limitation is that the host can only use one ASIO group at a time.
