Psy Q's shape function

Post by Music Manic »

Could someone explain the filter characteristics of the Shape dial when used in Psy Q.

This has to one of my favourite plugins in Scope. I've heard no other plugin like it.

Thanks

I'd imagine its the q of the filter.

For analysing that sort of thing is usually run some noise through it and then look(spectrum analyzer)/listen to the results when changing the filter shape.
I had to do that with my old EMU Ultras Z-Plane filters to fully understand them!

Would anybody know a non-Scope equivalent of PSY Q?

I am just getting back into audio and I only have my laptop and I'm then unable to run Scope, but this is one effect I am missing the most!

sure! it's a very expensive bit of hardware called the Vitalizer by SPL. there is also a Vitalizer plugin for UAD.

SPL has it as a vst native version too.
Good and dangerous thingies.

The PSY Q is one of the best plugins Scope has. To me it competes with the SPL vitalizer, hardware version.

I haven't tried the VST version but I don't think it would compete with the Scope DSP code.

Takes the "mud" out of a mix almost immediately.

I have both hardware and PsyQ.
They do sound the same for 99%, I did a test once.

Together with Optimaster I have it as default insert in my mixer master out.
If the track I'm working on gets shape I put them on, first periodically, later permanent during readymixing/mastering.

Take care with the stereo width, apply only minimal unless your ears will feel like your glasses are changed left-right, see Chris' warning.

Thanks for the replies.
$250 for the plugin, might be a bit much but I'll definitely try the trial version.

Psy-Q is included in Scope 5.1, so maybe you should consider upgrading instead:

If any one here has the version of Flu_Liq by MCCY which had waveform choices via a seperate GUI panel, It has inserts, 5 x bandwidth style and a final stage like output insert, where I put the PsyQ and it can change the sound of the effect in really controlled, drastic ways.
This is where I think software should always be, a step ahead of what it is emulating instead of an emulation of a certain effect.
THis makes that effect unlike any others I have ever owned or used.
Moog should actually use MCCYs idea as a hardware pedal, or a live performer buy a used Scope card just to use this on Electric Pianos or lifeless pads.
But the PsyQ inside if Flu_Liq for enhancement is breathtaking IMHO.

I love how this thing sounds but I'm afraid I'm going to overuse it when I start using it as a mastering tool :) I haven't done any mastering on my Scope system but now I finally have some tracks ready that can be mastered. I'm thinking about making a mastring chain with my analogue Focusrite compressor, Optimaster and Psy-Q. I'm not a mastering engineer so maybe I'm offending someone when I call this mastering ;)
