using a SSD Drive to boot XP as a second PC

Post by bosone »

after some discussion and thought, i am considering the option to use a pulsar 1 in an old PC.

the aim would be:

1) to have more dsp power to run some plugins: reverbs and dynatube (i may add other luna/pulsar1 for a few bucks and get between 10 and 12 dsp) - provided that the PCI bandwidth is enough...

2) to run a simple piano vst in the background with an ASIO host and use this PC as a standalone piano module.
This is because I want to get rid of my korg 01 RW: now I can play the korg 01 directly connected to my masterkeyboard so that, when i want to play piano/keys, i just switch on the master and the korg, not using any PC. this is immediate and it is wat i want: not to waiting to play keys!
but if i get rid of the korg i must find some other piano module (i thought smaller, such as alesis nanopiano, but still i can not find it at a suitable price second hand) or an alternative

so the problem of 2 would be to obtain FAST boot time with win XP (is win 98 SE an option?).

in order to speed up the boot i was thinking about a 16GB - 32 GB SSD IDE drive to install XP on that
is anyone using this for his operating system? how fast it is, in real life?

could this really be an otpion? (honestly i do not think so...)

thanks!

i use an old win 98 pc and i fitted a ide to cf dual card slot
and a internal ide to cf card interface with 2 dual card slots

master and slave on both

i use scsi for the cdrom

i use 16gb cf cards so that i can exchange
them when ever i want

the one with the os,s 1 with xp 1 with win98 so that i have a dual boot system

very queit and stable and faster loading time

ssds are definitely much faster.

i haven't used xp, but with win7, i can boot the computer open Scope and bidule, ready to play in less than 60 seconds.
