STS 5000 freezes SFP 4.5

Post by es1276 »

Hi folks.
In former times I often used the Mini Drum Player x8 and the Sample Player Z with software version 3.x and below. I never had any problems or crashes with it.
Recently I tried to replace those old instruments with the STS 5000, because both players are not available any more and I lost some necessary program files.

So I removed the Sample Player Z and the Mini Drum Player and loaded the samples into STS 5000 instead.
Since the STS 5000 is in the project the system occasionally freezes completely when Logic5.5 is running.
The audio is looping and I have to hard reset the system. Until now my system was running rock solid since many years.
There is no heavy disk or CPU load.
Because Im currently in the middle of a production I wouldnt like to switch to 5.1 now, if I dont have to.
Any ideas ?

This is my system configuration:
SCOPE 4.5
26 DSPs (one 14 DSP and two 6 DSP systems)
DSP load about 50%
WindowsXP SP2
Mainboard ASUS P4C800, 3 GHz, 1,5 GB RAM.
Logic 5.5
Emagic Unitor8 RS232 model

Start with a blank Scope project, add only the sample player and minimal I/O to actually hear it via a midi keyboard and nothing else, and run no sequencer.

Does it still crash ?

If not, then run logic pro.

Does it crash then ?

The system only crashes when Logic is running. Lets say twice in 8 hrs.
So it might be difficult to force the crash without the sequencer running.
Are there any other things I could try ?

that sounds like your controller is outputting active sensing. use a midi monitor to check. if you have active sensing coming into Scope from the controller, disable it in the controller, or if you can't do that use a midi filter...

Thanks Gary.

The STS 5000 gets the midi data stream directly from Logic via a Sequencer Midi source module.
So there is no really hardware controller in between.
I will check if active sensing is sent by Logic, put a filter in between and let you know what happens.
BTW: I use a Emagic Unitor8.

well, that's not the problem, then.

is your Scope card sharing an irq with anything? if so what, exactly?

This is my IRQ configuration.
Is IRQ23 a problem ?
If so, what can I do ?

first, you can try disabling the USB controller 24DD in the device manager. that will probably fix the problem.

OK: If Gary is asking me about IRQ sharing it IS actually a problem.

After checking the mainboard manual, I
- disabled the IEEE 1394 host controller
- moved one of the 6 DSP cards from PCI3 to PCI4.
(I need the 378 RAID controller so I cant disable it to get the IRQ 23 free)
So this is the hopefully better config now:

I will tell you if it is ok.
Do you have an idea why one of the cards has disappeared in SFP after changing the PCI slot ?
I had this problem some years ago but I dont remember the solution for that.

no, i don't no why a card has disappeared. that shouldn't happen. be sure that the stdm cable is connected properly and the the card is fully in the slot. you can also rerun the installer over the top of the old Scope install. this might fix the problem.

Oh, sorry. I should have known that: 8)
Windows needs to register the card in the new PCI slot as "new" hardware.
The SFP software started before this was completed.
So the SFP couldnt see it.
After I restarted SFP all three cards are back now.
Thanks a lot so far. :)

STS 5000 freezes SFP 4.5: Problem is still there

Post by es1276 »

So my IRQs are fine now (thanks for your help) but the problem is still there:
If the STS 5000 is in the project, the system freezes occasionally when Logic is running. :o
What else can I try ? :-?

Try STS4000 and STS3000 - see if same problem occurs. If it doesnt, maybe you can use one of the lesser STS. If it does, well probably doesnt help much except to say its a problem common to all STS.

I have put a midi filter between the sequencer midi source and the STS 5000.
All events, except NOTE ON / OFF are filtered out now.
Since then, there have been no freezes for 8 hrs. now.
If it turns out that this is the problem, I will enable all other events step by step, to see which one the problem is.
Any hints on that ?

This is great information, i used sts5000 for some few projects back some years ago.. but stopped because of the freezing you are describing.... so i ended up getting an emu sampler :P

If this is the solution, i might get back to the sts again :)

STS samplers freeze SFP 4.5

Post by es1276 »

Bad news: The midi filter did not solve the problem totally.
It's better now, but the the freezes still happen occasionally.
Same thing with STS2000P.
I'll switch back to Mini Drumplayer and Sample Player Z.
Can anybody send me the DSP file for the old sample player Z ?

Thanks.
