dynatube vs guitar rig / amplitube

Post by bosone »

i have the possibility to upgrade guitar rig to version 4 for about 45 euro.

i already have all dynatube, an POD pro and a behringer V-AMP

honestly, i am in doubt if upgrade or not.
using a native plugin could be more versatile (also because i have problems in saving dynatube setting in the project...) and i can get more options. there are more amps/fx/tweaks in guitar rig and in amplitube than in dynatube.

but i don't think dynatube soudns worse than any of the two and i got great sounds from it. maybe native solution is more straightforward.

i don't have CPU power problems, i downloaded the demo and i can load a lot of instances without problems.

and dynatube is a bit annoying if you have to deal with multiple guitar tracks and if you love to reamp: i usually record the dry track, tweak the sound / part and then record the "wet" processed guitar sound. i cannot load a lot of dynatube instances and, for example, having 4 or 5 reamped guitars and a bass is a problem with dynatube ( i have 18 dsp)

what are your experiences??

i would prefer upgrading to guitar rig 4 because i get lost with the new amplitube online shop and i dont' know what to buy with either 40 or 70 euro of credits... :P
but my general feeling is that amplitube sounds better than GR....

I prefer Dynatube to native rigs, in fact I just prefer the Marshall sound of Dynatube to any of the others for distorted rhythm and leads.

But I record with the dynatube effect rather than apply it later. If I want to treat the sound after recording I put it through DAS legend http://www.hitfoundry.com/issue_08/dlegend.htm to get some extra crunch, presence or bottom. depending on what else is happening in the mix.

Works well.

I think it is out of your planned budget around 189 EUR but I think this fine amp simulator is overlooked many times.
http://www.peavey.com/products/software/revalver/

It sounds very good to my ears, but I am not a guitar player though, I use these reamp programs for synth leads or sequences only.
I like it because you can 'dive' into a amp and model each valve or exchange it with an other, very detailed.

I've demoed the Peavey Revalver some time ago, and in fact it has a nice feature of circuit modification...
BUT that is entirely useless if you're not a tube guru or at least have specific knowledge on the subject ;)
The effects are complete crap, lot's of strange convolution going on.

From my memory it was a little more detailed than GuitarRig, but I found neither of these convincing at all.
I don't have the Dynatube guitar amp simulations, but the Bass Set is the BEST simulation I ever attended - it's stellar.
Not exactly spectacular, but as close as you can get to a real amp.

As that's (imho) way more difficult, I'd expect the guitar stuff to outperform the 'other' native solutions.
Ampeg SVX is more drama, but the sound is artificial - very cutting and in your face, which could fit a 'modern' production extremely well.
As an 'effect' it definitely has it's use, but realism isn't it's primary goal.
Imho most (native) plugins hit a specific direction and then more or less 'charicaturize' it.
Somewhat like post processors for synth sources, lacking the smooth dynamic where Dynatube really excels.

Another valid alternative if you don't want to model specific gear is Adern's MOJO.
Kind of your own custom boutique guitar amp with a great range of sounds.
Processing is very transparent (way ahead of GR) and keeps all those subtle pick noises.
With it's clever 'mix-strategy' of channels and parallel/serial processing you get the most detailed control over distortion you can imagine.
Tweaking is much more convenient than in 'traditional' setups.
If you need just 'that' little bit more, the controls provide plenty of 'way' todial it in. Quite resource effective btw.

cheers, Tom

Vandal and Dynatube are a great switch-over option and a great combo.

I like dynatube but very hard to use with a lot of noises, difficult to control it I find.

I like very much guitar rig; especially since pro 4 version because there is the 'control room' module wich allows you to have 8 tracks of great microphones responses and this is a great tool !
a lot of emulations of drive/distorsion amps and a nice clean sound amp ('jazz amp') really great for the clean sounds and the effects are all nice. (with a tube preamp (little VTB-1 Studio Projects) guitar rig sounds very good and is much easy-use than dynatube for me. Only the bassamp is not as good as the guitars amps in my opinion in GR. the limiter and gate on each preset are very usefull !

I have too (thanks discount !) GTR solo from waves, I don't have used a lot so I quickly heard some presets and it sounds better for the bass amp than guitar rig but different for the guitar amps but for me it's just another choice of sound wich can be interresting.
