Help needed: History of delays
sooo... i'm writing a bachelor paper on delays.
i need some infor about who used the different delays. I'm thinking famouse people here:)
I'm writing about these delays:
-"tapedeck" delays - normal tapedecks.. first used by the "musique conrete" people.(later elvis etc)
-real selfcontained echomachines: the binson echorecFor instance used by the guitarist from pink floyd David Guilmore.
-the roland space echo: famously used by.... who???? (pretty much everyone.. but who in particular?)
-The first massively available BBD: the memory man, used by.... famously used by who???
-digital delays, famously used by..... hmmm maybe the U2 guitarist?!? he had a very distinct way of using delays. (th TC2290 i believe)
thanks people! feel free to help and comment/share stories from the good old days: Jimmy/Xite4live feel free to chime in:)
And what do you think the future of delays will be? lots of iphone delay apps?:)

Re: Help needed: History of delays
Roland Space Echo was really used well by Bostons' guitarist ( Rocktron creator ).
Lexicon Prime Times were used by engineers very much too.
I still have my original brochure in mint condition for the Model 93 from the 70's.
I had to work 2 jobs and save like crazy to buy it.

Re: Help needed: History of delays
Well my few bits. All the hardware delays were used by good old german electronic music (EM) pioneers , Klaus Schulze, Kratfwerk etc. and are still used in the EM studios.
EM cannot exit without delays. In pop rock you will find use of the delay more sporadic.
I am not a hardware dinosaur so other here can help you more on that, but a real surprise in the reverb and delay hardware section are the eventide things, very creative, IMHO.
I am more a software freak, so I'll say something about that. For your paper it could be interesting to flash a bit on the software side of delays. There are some interesting delay attempts came out in the past. Most noticeable would be the fft delays. You have up to 1024 freq bands and each band can be setup with its own delay time and pan. NI came out with that some years back, called spectral delay.
Virsyn have something similiar now with the FDelay:
http://www.virsyn.com/en/E_Products/E_F ... delay.html
Also interesting could be a thought about an overview on the other modulation effects.
Short delay times will give resonators, higher will give you phaser, then flanger, then chorus, delays, echoes and finally reverbs.
Rough said.
Good hunt on your BA !

From here :

"In 1948, Ampex introduced its Model 200 tape recorder, which revolutionized the entertainment industry. It was used to produce the first tape-delayed radio broadcast in the United States."
I'd be interested to know if they ever made a delay setup before then using the wire recorders.

Re: Help needed: History of delays
I think it might be worth looking at the BBC sound department for early use of delays along with many other sound creation innovations
Re: Help needed: History of delays
My first soundman when I was 14 had a Teac Reel to Reel and a pencil.

Re: Help needed: History of delays
Wasn't the tape tech stolen from Germany at the end of the WW II and introduced at ampex later.......dante wrote:From here :

There's a Roland Space echo clearly visible in this picture of Lee Pery's Black Ark studio:

Re: Help needed: History of delays
it doesnt really say who specifically used the memory man the first (or one of the first times)... other than u2 - and i doubt they were the first. the memory man has been around since late 70's.
But thanks for the time though

Re: Help needed: History of delays
Some of the first heavy duty delay users were folks such as Robert Fripp and Steve Hillage. One of the first I became aware of was Terry Riley, the keyboardist.
