AES/EBU vs SPDIF

Post by bosone »

with an SPDIF connection, the master clock is generated by the external hardware: i have a behringer VAMP and i can use digital connection only if the VAMP is the master and scope is the slave

is the same with AES/EBU digital connection?

with a scope I/O plate with the AES/EBU connection, and the VAMP connected with AES/EBU, will it be able to get the clock signal form the scope?
i.e. could i use the scope as hte master and the VAMP as slave with the AES/EBU connection?

thanks!

When i connect my Pod via AES i always have to have Scope as Slave - don't know why. Anyway the SPDIF and AES protocols are almost exactly the same - the only difference i'm aware of being a byte that says "Hi, I'm AES". So i think the answer to your question will be that it will make no difference.

for something to recieve clock, it must have an input. devices that only have digital outputs MUST be master.

And if you have both input and output you cannot run it together with another device with both input and output, i.e. no side-chaining through AES/SPDIF on the scope.
At least that is the case with my Studio400, but I think it's a general drawback of using digital connections since the clock sync cannot be maintained when routing signals around.

All i know is, my Podxt Pro has AES in and out and the bastard thing won't slave, hence Scope has to be the slave, which is not my ideal scenario.

Thanks garyb, that's a nice bit of info. Gotta get myself a cable and see if it will work with my Studio400!
