Newbie question: drivers installed but no audio

Post by VoicOfReason »

I installed the basic Pular 2 (SonicCore Project) dirvers (v4.5). But, there is no audio and all the volume controls are greyed out in Windows control panel sounds. I haven't installed the basic software yet since I'm waiting on the key by email. Shouldn't the audio be working by now, though?

Did you check the device manager and is the card listed in sound devices? And is there an exclamation point over it?

Yes. It is listed and says to be working with no problems.

Try to uninstall the driver, reseat the card & reinstall the driver..and if you have a different PCI slot, try that one.

Last question, what chipset and mb are you using...and what OS

no.
the Scope card is not a standard windows soundcard and it doesn't work like one. the software is required. the windows controls don't apply.

yup, what Gary said

Scope doesn't get embedded in Windows services (very much) like a Soundblaster or whatever.

I have my Pulsar II card as the default audio device in windows. Nothing is grey. No problem. All apps play through my card.

I even installed another OTC sound card, to see & I still have the choice to select what sound device I want to use.

I think what Gary means though is that simply assigning things in windows isn't enough, Scope must be running and properly configured in the routing window as well, and using windows controls has no effect on this (though it will point windows apps to look for Scope drivers.)

If I'm not supposed to have any Windows control over the card, then how do I control the volume. I can open the Sonic Core control panel, but there's no volume controls anywhere, and the speakers just emit a faint high pitch. Volume is completely greyed out in Windows. This is not making sense to me?!

You need to create a project in the Scope window. Create a basic one with say a Wave Source module routed to a small mixer then to the Analog Dest module. This will send any wav sources to your monitoring. Control the volume with the mixer.

wow, from the beginning....

windows, as a program, can't control the Scope card because the audio isn't being processed in windows. the Scope card handles audio differently than a true "sound card". all audio is processed on the Scope card's processors, not the CPU. the Scope project is a map of all your routing into and out of the computer and in and out of all of your programs. it is virtual reality. by placing the appropriate modules into the routing window, the in and output JACKS for the devices that are your applications(the sequencer or media player, for example) are available for routing in any way you please. you can use a mixer to control all of your levels going out of the computer, and you can get in and out of the computer with no latency.

in addition, the dsp chips can be various synths and audio tool devices, which can be used in the window. using the Scope mixer allows zero latency monitoring for overdubs.

Scope really wasn't made to be used for games, the internet and using media players(although my internet computer uses a 3dsp card quite nicely for those things), it was designed to be a higfhly flexible, first quality sounding, music production environment. as such, it's workflow is more like a traditional recording studio, and it interfaces quite well with a traditional studio, rather than a computer toy.

i'd be happy to speak by phone or skype to help you get started if you pm me.
