Audio....From Microphone

Post by fraz »

Hi there,

I've just added a microphone to my setup of Pulsar 2 and Power Sampler....it's good to see this progress but there are some teething problems.......with clicks and pops etc.....;....

The mic is going through a behringer ADA8000 8in/8out ADAT interface.....with mic preamps on it....I have managed to configure the Scope project correctly with the ADAT A source and B source modules and have successfully got a mic signal going through the big mixer in the scope project and tested it by talking through mic etc.....

There are however clicks and pops that come through the speakers every few seconds or so......The card latency was on 7ms which I have altered to 13ms but this has had little effect.......The PC is not a powerful PC (AMD 2000+ 1.67Ghz) 256RAM though maybe this shouldn't make too much difference (the ram may....not sure).....other thing is the cables maybe interfearing with each other but again I'm not sure.....thats why I'm here to ask for some help in getting a stable setup..... :D .....Thanks in advance.....

The Mic btw is a sure SM57 / 58 dynamic

well, maybe the problem is solved......there is a setting on the ADA8000 for master and slave....(for master 44.1khz switch) or for slave it's just the ADAT in switch.......this is what I've just tried and it works with no pops clicks etc..... :P .....so presumably the Pulsar 2 is the master.....?....this is correct isn't it?

It is often possible to save a lot of time by reading the manuals.

Yes it is possible to save time by reading manuals but if you are unsure about something in the first place it's often better to ask to reach the crux of the matter......

Scope as Master, ADA8000 as slave is the optimal configuration. The 'crackles' you were hearing was the lack of sample sync, causing the ADAT stream to not be aligned resulting in a 'bad' sample being read by the scope card every time that 'click' or crackle was heard.

Arkadin is suggesting (in his own way) that you might want to use one of the more modern mixers in Scope, the "Big Mixer" has some flaws that have been addressed in the newer ones.

Thanks Valis,

I thought he was suggesting that the bid mixer was pants..... .....I can use the 16something or other which looks better! on the Pulsar 2 - Thanks for explaining a little about the crackles etc....and even though I don't understand 100% I do have an understanding of a sync issue which has now gone due to ADA8000 being slave.........

Another issue though not as important is I connected another DAW PC with a simple L+R out into two of the ADAT ins on the Pulsar 2, the idea being I can sync via MIDI and play samples etc....from this other PC into scope. At this stage the audio is piped through and is audible however there is a descrepency on the L+R in channel on ADAT as the left channel is less than the right channel - Sometimes the synth patches on the other PC do vary slightly from left to right channel but even so there is in my opinion too much of a difference in the two channels so some wise advice would be appreciated and thanks in advance.... :)

Figure out how to route the same exact signal to both outputs and use that as a test; if you have no way to have flexible routing just use a wav editor & duplicate one channel to the other. I usually create test tones myself anyway. Make sure that PC is slaved to Scope as well.
