P2 cable set - can it be made?

Post by geoffd99 »

Hi all
I am after the cable set bunch that goes in the connector at the back of a P2, the one with audio, spdif, midi.

Is there a way of making one up? I am nifty with a soldering iron.

These are 45 eu + 15 eu post = 60 eu in the shop which is too high for me. (For a cable)
Or has anyone got a faulty card and want to sell the cable set?

Ta

You could ask ralf about the connector pin layout.Or measure it yourself..seems like a lot of work tho.

I assume the pin block is some standard part, then I only need audio in and out, so not too much fiddling about.

If you just need audio i/o then get a db 25 male and measure away. :) ( I assume the connector is db25....)

you could even make a snake that gos to a nice rack panel or a box instead of the not so nice dangly inline connectors.

I got this off the ever reliable Ralf, attached diagram - it is a D-SUB 25 pins

this is the wiring for a plus plate (symmetric xlr and aes). is your board a plus? I think I remember you saying spdif...
and btw, a standard db25 connector has 2 pin rows and is 53.4mm wide, while this one has 3 and is 39.2mm. this one has 26 pins, btw.
so you need either this male or this female connector.

(don't remember if the whip has is male or female. I think it was male...)

didn't find matching hoods yet...

I will check, this is the diagram Ralf sent, I will look at making it up next week.

It is a P2 6 dsp card, with the lightpipe I/O etc.

both plates (classic and plus) have double adat i/o. the plate itself is different, though. I expect a somewhat different wiring, too, since one has unbalanced analog i/o and spdif, the other has balanced i/o and aes/ebu.

Best to ask Ralf if he's got a different wiring diagram for the 'classic I/O' cable. It may well be using the ground & hot pins in this diagram for the unbalanced analogue on the classic, but it's better to check rather than take any risks.

We are talking of the classic i/o right? Then it's female, but if you're making your own....choice is yours

Could you post up or pm the classic i/o cable whip schematic if you manage to get it from Ralf?

Cheers, I liked the suggested idea of building a breakout box/rack panel

I found a picture of the Z-Link plate in the manual. the plate I/O connector is female, so the whip plug has to be male...
afair the classic plate and the Z-Link plate share the same whip. I don't expect the plus whip to be crafted vice versa, especially not because they say in the manual:
"Since the circuitry of the Classic and Plus I/O is different, it is not possible just to swap the cable whip".

and since the connector on the board is soldered to it, there is no "the choice is yours" , even if I make my own cable...

Geoff, making one looks like a huge task (unless you're super good at soldering mini pins).
Easy to screw something.
Unless you'd want the xlr version, I've got one spare (3 midi dins, 2 spdif rca, 4 analog rca).
Where do you live ? Come over to Marseille and get one free, or you pay for the shipping.

Hey that is very helpful, thanks. I can't pop over as busy with baby Sydney but can send postage. I have been so busy I have not got around to buying the D-SUB yet. This post might be useful for future cable makers though!
I'll pm you.

It' was just a clear case of me not understanding the end of the cable being talked about
but great for clearing it up Markus.
After all that soldering and then to find out it was the wrong plug !!! It doesn't bear thinking about.

Yes it is male, I have the card here.
Ralf only has that one diagram shown above.
