hmmm that title does indeed sound strange....
Anyway: is there some kind of (free) device that can be inserted into a mixer, which has a slot that can hold a non-insert effect?

Yeah sure it crossed my mind! In fact I'm using that all the time for non-insert effects, but in many instances the simplicity (in both ergonomical and functional sense) of an inserted effect is preferable for me....

the insert comes after the first gain stage (sometimes after eq as well) in a traditional mixer.using the device inline with the sound source into the mixer will accomplish essentially the same thing, the entire signal going thru the device.the only disadvantage is the fact that you can't put the effect at the end of a chain of events.how about coming out a direct out(or a bus) into the device, and then back into a new channel?
p.s. many devices which don't claim to be insert effects will work if you put them in there.(but you probably know that)

Only hassle is the way some presets are configured: the dry/wet ratio may cause problems. I saved most common ins/aux fx as both an insert and an aux effect (same device, different presets).

You can insert most effects into a slot, except:
-some devices w midi I/O
-some devices with mono in/stereo out (ie. Celmo Leslie, Horus the Chorus,...)
-it's a pitty all Planetz effects come 'mono in' active, instead of stereo in. This is a user setting. But, once you've loaded ie. Zorba into a slot, there's no way you can activate your righthand input. Doh. Most other devices that have that can be stored as standard stereo in, but as Planetz devices are protected, that is impossible.

enjoy your inserts
