System Hanging Problem, resolution and questions?

Post by djmooncat »

Hi Everyone,

I've had to rebuild my scope machine running XP SP3 due to a total system failure. It had been sometime since I've done this and had probably forgotten a number of the tricks I'd worked out over the years of using scope. Anyway, once built i found the system would hang about 10 - 20 minutes after starting up. After some reading f planet-Z and playing around with the system I figured out it was to do with running ACPI. I changed the computer type the system was running from ACPI to "MPS Multiprocessor PC", the great new was that after a number of reboots XP's plug and play detected all the hardware and the system is now back up and running amd the system is now stable, I've been searching for the differences between using ACPI and the MPS Multiprocessor PC and there isn't a great deal documented about it, if anyone has a view or links about this I would be very interested to read them.

So the next step was just to look at SFP and make sure it was happy, so I opened up Mark Russinovich process monitor tool and logged what happend when SFP starts up to make sure there weren't any issues. I found that at the end of the process of starting SFP and then after a short period it tries to open a number of files which are not located on the system or in the origal installation files. they are:

C:\Scope_4_5\App\Bin\PepBase\PepNBasic.nfo
C:\Scope_4_5\App\Script\PepNBasic.nfo
C:\Scope_4_5\App\Bin\PepBase\PepNDBasic.nfo
C:\Scope_4_5\App\Script\PepNDBasic.nfo
C:\Scope_4_5\App\Bin\PepBase\PepModule.nfo
C:\Scope_4_5\App\Script\PepModule.nfo
C:\Scope_4_5\App\Bin\PepBase\PepDisplayObject.nfo
C:\Scope_4_5\App\Script\PepDisplayObject.nfo
C:\Scope_4_5\App\Bin\PepBase\Button2.nfo
C:\Scope_4_5\App\Script\Button2.nfo

The result process monitor shows is 'Name Not found', does anyone know is these files are important and whether not having them will impact system performance, functionality or stabilty? In the pepbase folder i can only find .dll files and one file called pepbase.idx

all .nfo files are simply text files telling something about the associated item, kinda read-me stuff of no importance (let alone functionality) at all.
The reference is probably an accidental left-over from pre-distribution stages.

Hi there,

Thanks for the info about the .nfo files, so nothing to worry about there. Microsoft has an article which describes the optione you have to change the HAL types:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/309283

My thinking is that by using the MPS Multi Processor machine HAL you get all the benefits of the hypter threading without the power enhancment options, on my DAW i want everything that is not needed switched off to reduce the number number of processes running on the machine.
