A16 Ultra - Firewire cables
A16 Ultra - Firewire cables
Just curious about something - is there is recommened maximum length for the firewire cables between the A16 Ultra and Scope? I'm just curious if you can run safely lengths of 15' or more? Or is there is built-in specification for all that somewhere? Anyone tried any experiments along these lines? Basically I'm just curious how far can the A16 be from the PC and still run without issue? Any noise or dropped bits or anything else to worry about?

Re: A16 Ultra - Firewire cables
Not sure what 'standard' they adhere to - whether it's nearer FW400 which supposedly only allows 4.5 metres and FW800 which allows a massive 100 metres, but that's quite a difference so worth knowing.

I'm assuming you mean the ADAT light pipe cables? Not firewire...but, I may be wrong. Is z-link firewire?

Re: A16 Ultra - Firewire cables
No I'm using Z-Link.
I might have wrongly assumed that Z-Link has some relationship to Firewire because of the cables but that might not be true at all (sorry I'm a little vague on even the difference between Firewire and Z-Link). They may be totally not related at all except for the cables. I was just curious if there was a known limitation on the distance between the A16 Ultra and the Scope cards. I assume, just based on anything else in life, the shorter the distance the better.

Re: A16 Ultra - Firewire cables
Yes that's a good question. The Z-Link protocol is totally different compared to the firewire protocol. The only thing which they have in common is that they use the very same cables/connectors. I assume that the maximum length for a firewire cable is the same for Z-link as for the firewire (FW400) protocol. Why? I don't know, it's all digital data through the same cable, does it matter what the protocol is?
Maybe the best thing is to just try it to find out
good luck

afaik it is a basic subset of IEEE1394, but some proprietary protocol on top of it.krizrox wrote:I might have wrongly assumed that Z-Link has some relationship to Firewire...[/b]
there is no explicit cable lenght suggestion in the manual, so I assume the shorter the better.I was just curious if there was a known limitation on the distance between the A16 Ultra and the Scope cards. I assume, just based on anything else in life, the shorter the distance the better.
