A true story from what once was Portugal:

A person was stopped by the motor police. The reason for this, was that the police had information that the driver was using biodiesel (cooking oil+diesel) in his vehicle. He was fined and the car arrested. Why? Because he hadn't paid the fuel tax for what was in the tank.

2 questions:

1- How come you have to pay fuel tax for your cooking oil? It's not petrol, it was taxed already in the supermarket, and it's combined with bona fide diesel, bought at premium and taxed at the pump. So, what is this extra tax that appears when you want to recycle and reuse your oil? Much cheaper to pour it down the toilet, no? Oh, environment, right...

2- How on earth did the police know about what fuel that car was using?.........................

They didn't used to raise the price. It's the internet, media hype and news wire services that are raising the price. Basically they just know it will go up even if there is no damage so everyone buys the futures. I would love to have regulations on short term trading. Make them hold anything they buy for a year or so. That ought to smooth things out.

Greg, the knock-on effects of these scams are really quite disturbing. The cost of electricity has risen dramatically in the past couple of years. The electricity suppliers really annoy me. My supplier charges me a 'standard charge' per week even if I switch off all the electricity & go away on holiday or whatever. What a f**king con.
