VDAT 4 live

Post by eliam »

Hello there! I'm still in the process of putting up my live act and I want to use VDAT as playback device. My question: can I remote-control the device with my external controller? It doesn't seem to have the usual midi assignment. I'd like to control the transport buttons mainly.
Thanks

you can use the VRC-S device connected to VDAT to receive the midi controls
usual hint: if anything is unclear or obscure, refer to the original Adat documentation by Alesis
you get a much better idea what VDAT is about...

cheers, Tom

Eliam,

You will have a much better sound using VDAT. I can't even fathom the sequencer apps' quality after using 32bit Integer. On headphones it isn't drastically noticable, but on good near and mid field monitors the difference is very obvious.

VDAT sounds so clean, but once you try and transfer the sound out of the box, it starts to sound like a sequencer app.

But Live I know of nothing that has better quality.

I think its because 1 sample = 1 sample rather than 1 sample = 1 sort of sample calculated whenever the CPU feels like it.

Ok, thanks for the tips, but I still don't see how to have the remote/VDAT respond to midi messages... there's no midi in/assignment on either of the devs. I'll look further into it.

The sound is pristine indeed, will give me nice accompaniment tracks for blowing my clarinets/flutes... great!!

to add something to the topic in a more general context... as it just entered my mind
do not use VDAT on it's own live
use the tapes as sources for SAW-Studio
it is so much better to organise, more reliable and automatable by various hardware devices

I mean... I have no routine at all with this software (just making my way through the demo), but I've never cut a handful of audio tracks faster and in such a totally relaxed way :D
the bloody thing is spot on the job...
you can simply leave the VDAT files as they are - just mark the relevant parts as regions and place those in SAW's multitrack window. The program will operate on and with them, but non-destructively ... unless you tell it to write...
it's really worth checking that out in the demo yourself
the 'Basic' version for 300 bucks shpould be sufficient for this purpose

obviously there are extensive grouping functions for more complex procedures etc but I'm at the single file level still ;)

cheers, Tom
