Managing big synth projects

Post by RP_001 »

I've been experimenting with JB's Solaris and Prowave (for anyone who doesnt know them, try the demo NOW, cause they are simply amazing!! ) this week using a scope pro and 2x pulsar II.

I was curious how people, using lots of dsp hungry synths, manage their projects. Do you use different versions of your projects?? Mostly i load about 5 or 6 different synths in a project with 4/5 voices each synth, depending on the synth used of course.... and that leaves little room for setting up big mixers with all their insert/aux effects so i can also do my mixing at the same time.

Or is it easier to set up two versions of your project for instance? One for loading all the synths used. And then after finishing your track, and exporting your synths (VDAT??) setup another project with only the audio files loaded, so you can route them to the big heavy mixers with all the heavy reverbs and fx loaded.

Im trying to make a convenient way of working, and i was wondering how you setup your projects. Any suggestions would be very welcome :)

Welcome to the world of FAT BASTARDS.

I use a project where only the FP106B and VDAT are loaded, then import Solaris twice w/ a 2 voice preset. This way I can have a 4 voice monophonic lead and an 8 voice poly preset.after raising the poly on each synth so I can record 2 synths simultaneously.

Cubase 4.0 can have Gigastudio going into 8 separate stereo tracks for drums.

This uses 20 tracks out of 32 in VDAT.

I can then add other synths once I remove Solaris and say want to add WS4-MKII, or Prowave to add the remaing 6 stereo tracks left in VDAT.

Once I have all 32 tracks recorded I can master them in STM1632 ( Not ) or Wolf's 16 channel mixer in the same project after removing the FP106B.

This is unorthodox but effective,

XITE-1 will change this thankfully.

I am feverish imaginig how big of a recording or live project I can have loaded.

My approach has been to use CPU synths for pads where I need lots of polyphony (thankfully Arturia's CS-80V is really good, as are NI FM8 and Cakewalk's Rapture), and then use Scope only for monophonic/duophonic bass and lead lines. The dual-platform approach works pretty well. I used to like to use Scope for everything VA, but that approach never gets me too far. :(

As Jimmy said, Scope Xite will change everything. :D

Rapture is my favorite analog emulation for VST's, but Solaris 5.0.6 will definately win in the authenticity department.

I can only use SpaceF's FP106B and 2 x instances of Solaris. The 4 voice monophonic lead, and the 4 voice polyphonic beast in the demo.

8 voices of Solaris is all that I can achieve, or need for that matter.

SpaceF's Multi-Synth can get 24 voices, 3 x synths w/ 8 voices each. It is also a very FAT BASTARD.

That is on a 45-dsp system ?? :o

Again , im not using it in a Live situation. For "normal"studio use i could always have a workaround by getting all my sounds together first, and afterwards by "overdubbing" the sounds by increasing voices and recording that into VDAT. Or should quality be better by recording through the Space F mixers ??

Yepp,

45 DSP's.

But SpaceF is releasing a Stereo Channel soon that will be the ultimate little device for doing this.

I could use the same synth I used in the demo w/ 4 voices, and this device of his, and I doubt that more than 15 DSP's would be needed.

My whole gig is stereo AUX's. Only on high end mixers in hardware, and Scope developers can they be found.

Glad you are enjoying the platform.
