Will this seriously affect my computer??

Hi so far ive used my computer(2gb ram, pentium4 3.0) just as the station of my stuidio with a pro card, all vsts, cubase sx.... and i need to know how or if installing a high end gaming graphics card into my system will effect my studio towards producing and using scope? Its just that enjoy gaming as well when im not producing and dont have another computer for it. Thanks

I think it should be fine, as long as you can find one without a cooling fan that is too noisy. Gigabyte makes a Passively cooled 8600GT which is fine for most games, not a super high end one, but those have a noisy fan on them.

i know it ill work but will it slow my computer down when producing or add latency? the card i want to install is a pci express

from what I`ve heard, the 8800gt series have a less noisy cooler design also. and they are manufactured in less nm so they produce less heat also.
.(the 7800 series was very lound, annoying!!and there was no rpm regulation)

maybe add 1 or 2 silent case coolers, (papst).... to keep the overall system cool, so that the scope cards don`t damage by gaming heat....

I will add a 8800GT also soon or later. the rpice per value is quite good on that card.
there are also different cooler designs available....

similar to zalman cooler design, should be quite silent.

also remember to check how many PCI spaces it covers. seems like the 8800GT pictured only occupies one slot, but my 8800GTS covers one pci-slot in addition to the used pci-e slot.

regarding 1slot/2slot:
I wouldn`t put a scope card directly beside a 8800 anyways....
just because of the potential heat.

think of an sli combination with a scope card beside the two. lol

I wouldn't do it. As for a nice game on that machine you could practice some modular synthesis and make cool new sounds when not on a specific project....can't see a nicer game on a Scope equipped machine!

I have a 8800Gt on my other computer and "less noisy" is only correct if for instance you are calling it "less noisy than a snow plow"

anyways apart from that, if you have a PCIE card on there now, and its working fine, then the chances are that changing to a higher moder will not make any difference toy your scope stuff.

Neutron, which one do you own?

So I have an idea, which one I don`t wanna buy....

I had a 7900GT and send it back because it was as loud as a hair dryer.

The worst thing was it had no fan rpm regulation, so it really sucks if you have to work on a word/excel sheet and concentrate on it and there is always a hair dryer running.

I wouldn`t mind if its loud inside a game and more silent in desktop mode.
I`m pretty sure that the the xpertVision 8800GT with the zalman style cooler s quite silent in most situations...

The 8600Gt compared is really weak regarding gaming power. So no real alternative for a gamer.

That fan makes more sound than all the other 3 120mm fans (which are running very slow) on a overclocked q6600

strange, doy ou believe the stock cooler is more silent? I`ve only read good stuff about the loudness of the 8800GT series.

I mean you cannot expect silent, but a high frequent noise is unacceptable for the standard user that also wanna work with a system imo.

well i am used to silent. i had passive cards 2 times before, going back to the ati 9800 pro with zalman passive.
and the rest of the computer is almost silent so it seems too loud. the noise isnt annoying though its a woosh, not a whine.

ah okay the 7900GT had a high frequent noise sound at the top of the standard noise, and that was most annoying, like a small turbine...

(when a normal cooler sounds like white noise, the 7900gt had something like a sine at the top end, such sound can make aggressive after 20 min.)

when I first plugged in I heard that sound "wiiiiiiiiii"
I thought ah okay this is at full speed and it will regulate down in desktop mode.

To my surprise the speed did not go down.

what a joke, such a bad engineering from nvidia. The next generation was said to be much better. But for sure not silent. And its all up to save some cents on a cooler design.

A small amount of "wind" noise doesn`t disturb me. My current system is not silent too.

The only two things I can see as problems are: the size of your power supply and temperature. If your power supply is big enough and you control heat, you’re done.

All on the contrary to what you suggest, having a bigger video support, frees resources from the rest of the system. These high end graphic cards like the 88 series have their own ram and processor and uses extremely little resources from the system itself, at least, most of them are build in this way. Having one so, it is in fact an advantage to any SCOPE DAW.

I myself have a pretty powerful one 86000 and it works flawlessly.

Hi,

If your graphic card is close to your scope cards make sure the graphic card is actively cooled. My MSI (GT8600) passive belched out loads of heat and made scope crackle, I think? Well, once I took it out all was good again. Back to just a scope machine again...
