POLL: Should SC add some of the free devices in SCP 5 ?

Post by MCCY »

I for myself would be VERY happy, to see one, two, three of my best free devices included in the SCP 5 package. I'd do it for free of course.
If there are any problems with bugs left, I'd fix them of course...

I bet other developers would feel proud too, to be distributed with the SCP 5.

Which free devices would make sense to be included in SCP5. What are your favourites from all free developers?

Martin

EDIT: Oh, I found a bug ;) Of course I meant: Soniccore instead of creamware in the poll-question! 8)

what for. free devices are available here
Yes, of course & I think such move would underline the importance of PlanetZ & the free developers for the platform. People could be attracted, who would have never found planetz if there was no straight hint on quality-devices here.

Only if basically bug free, or at least at a good level and not as an automatic install, only as an added folder on the CD or a separate download. The fact is that it can't be part of the same license, it's a bit a complex thing but it can't be ignored.

I could imagine them being optional components to be installed separately. unsupported by SC and therefore not included in the main repository.
could be indeed a nice move to show respect to the planetz community, attract people to drop in here, and provide some fame to the developers :).

but then, the free devices of the commercial developers are not included either. so they have to promote them on their own websites. there are so many to think of, that I'm afraid SC would get lost soon here, and they have some serious things to get done...

the more I think about it, the more I believe continuously maintaining a good link collection to free devices is the way to go.

It might be a good idea for us SDK developers to just send devices to SC that we consider to be good enough, as & when they're finished, but the SC guys are probably so busy that they wouldn't get a chance to properly try the devices until after the release of SCP5. :)

i can see how it might be a bit much for SonicCore in terms of time. One thought that just came to me would be to give current free developers - Shroomz/Sharc (RIP), McCyrano, hifiboom and (maybe in the future) Neutron their own subsection in the devices forum, so rather than things popping up and drifting to the bottom unseen unless you trawl through the whole forum, you can check what's new by developer. Of course this would mean work for John and he may not like the idea anyway, but it was just a thought.

provide some fame to the developers
O.K. That's my main point.
But since the beginning I had some charts for devices in mind, which just keep up the motivation - yes, some kind of fame-game like other internet-portals with mp3-download. Of course this would have meant lots of time testing for those who elect that charts & in my case a lot of critic, I guess, for fast-developement-including-beginner-bugs but I bet this would have been worth all the efforts expecially BEACAUSE there are so many devices & if I was new to this side I would have serious problems to decide what to test & what not. If I tested my wrong device... lets say... "passive fader" I wouldn't think of downloading another mccy device. Yeah, the "easiest" thing for me would be an own webside with very detailed information on each device... but maybe this won't ever come, because I like to spend my short time rather in developing than in hp-design...
A webside like that dedicated to the modular-stuff would be great.

Same here, but I don't really like the idea of footing the bills for maintaining a domain name, server & website at the moment and that's an obvious issue for other sdk guys who are spending chunks of their free time on sdk & releasing their work for free.... It's one thing building and releasing free devices, but it's another kettle of fish having to pay for the privilage to do so beyond buying a pro card.

Me too thinks SC will never include SDK devices in the installer, or even separatedly included.
Good and different arguements are given already.

But I agree with mr Arkadin, a place where they can put the streight plugs would be nice, the production is enormous and gets lost somehow.
Their own forum, with only guest and download use for the others.
They will restrict themselves to just post devices with a presentation/explanation/recommendation text, plus debugged updates :-D
If each developer uses his name in the subject you can find everything easily.

A website is indeed better suited to offer and present plugs, but there are some consequences indeed (time, mony, communication).
At the same time, if you say SDK you say Planetz :-)
To me it looks nicer to have it here.

What this would mean for John I don't know, it will take time at least, so I can understand well if he's too bussy.
But it could also be he likes the idea of having some order in this new and spontanious development.

So a 'no' for me, as you never should ask for something which you know you will never get :-D

I would like to see Soniccore give an honorable mention of PlanetZ, and the SDK contributors personally.

One hand works with the other.

That mention would also be your basic customer service for those illiterate, such as I was. Hell PlanetZ had enough patience to show me how to do an email. I was that lame.

I love Ralf and the boys, but could you imagine them trying to decipher the stupid questions from this Yank?

There are plenty of great devices here for people to discover once they are up and running.

If I was Soniccore, I would be nervous of the awesome graphics that certain people have used here.

Cos and Void are actually the first non emu type synths I remember, that had a unique look to them.

Be Fruitful And Multiply,

All of my favorites.....let's see.............I need another thread.

But your device that makes me smile was the spring reverb. It has such a great twang to it. I use Celmos spring, and yours quite often, and still experiment w/ it. It is a super tweaker, especially when valves are added to the insert, or another echo / verb.

My 2 cents.

well, if you and/or martin are willing to contribute some content and design ideas, I'd be ready to spend some time getting stuff available here. domain, server and website would be no issue, since that's our business. pm me if interested. don't expect master coding, but I'm kinda familiar with html4 and vi :). no javascript, though. I already did some small enhancements for hifiboom, so if content is your major concern, there's surely a way.

I don't think the idea of an 'extras' folder on the install cd, and a link to 'extras' on the SC site (for the v5 download) is all that bad an idea. License terms for demo & free devices are usually done by the developer and should be included in each dev's packaging (zip or whatever), and I don't see any need to have explicit terms with SC beyond perhaps an agreement that including the devices in anything in the future that SC might think of should be opt-in (versus being included by default and needing to opt out).

In the audio world it's probably more common that a company licenses devices for inclusion in their 'me too' featurism wars, or hires the developer of a free toolset to do same, but I'm not sure why they would want to include a folder of 'extras' made from synthedit etc anyway. Scope devices made with the SDK or DP and pass a certain level of quality (no 0.45 versions eh) shouldn't create any negative impressions amonge users imo.

I can think of a great many companies that include this stuff, from adobe's "Extras" subfolders, to softimage & maya's inclusion of community scripts and tools buried in their extra contest discs, the demos of plugins you can get with 3dsmax/lightwave and so on.

In fact I'd warrant a great many users don't know about PlanetZ and the devices section, and hence miss out on many of the good 'freebies' available, which is on part with what's been said above. A quick mention about hte forums etc would be great, although we'll all have to suffer the influx of newbies as well. :)

Just wanted to add that whatever SC decide about any of this is totally cool with me, even if that is essentially 'nothing', especially since the new guy 'santa' is giving each of us a snow white A16u. :D

trust me, i hate to be the devils advocate on this one!

- devices supplied on a sonicCore package should be FULLY supported by SC themselves. there should be NO reason to market them selves with freely available devices if they cant support it in detail. they could supply a link to planet z, but to include devices in their setup would bring responsibility to them according to support.

- with all due respect to MCCY and Shroomz, this would lead to an excpectation of commercial support of a free plugin. i cant see how this is fair to any 3rd party developer as i cant see SC taking responsibility for it (please correct me if im wrong)

- I would totally endorse the idea of SC BUYING the commercial rights for some of the devices the developers in question has provided, but SHROOMZ, MCCY, and all other devs: remember that if your product is included in Scope 5, it will be considered a commercial plugin with commercial demands regarding support. i have NO idea why you would give this for free in a release, as i consider it more of a bonus coming here to planet Z. Bisniss wise its a dead end, trust me. Not that SC is gonna fool you, but you will meet a totally new market of DEMAND considering support.

im sorry, but unlesss you get paid and are able to set up a proper support team (for free?) your probably fucked.

my humble opinion.

And trust me Martin, You will all get the respect you deserve here. i find both of your and shroomz devices useful, and would pay for them if you set up a shop, as i bought JB, Spacef, wavelength devices.

you just need to understand what is DEMANDED of an official release.

Thanks piddi!

You're right of course, but I didn't think of relabeling them & putting them from the free status to an "official" one. Leave them, what they are: Free devices from planetz. Just give them as example-addon what is possible & what you find on planetz. The same would work with creamware-site-charts of the most usefull free devices. For me that would be the same.

I rather thought of a spotlight saying "Here you find devices from the planetz community. More is to be found there, but these are some highlights."
This would make people attract to scopes endless possibilities + attracting them to buy scope pro to get the sdk.
I think most people don't really understand the unbelievable potential of planetz - new customers will oversee them easily or get lost in their endless variety. So why not pointing a bit more precisely to some examples of that work without putting them under another license.
Just one hint: "You can get this & more when you visit planetz. The included devices are tested & seen as very usefull, but there is no responsibility or support taken for their funktionality."

I just wonder why not the full potential of scope should be brought to the new customers. I'd say this community is the best part with scope. Without the free stuff & SDK it would not have 1/2 value to me.

I would prefer some sort of database system:

where developers could upload a free device, with a picture of it, a small description and a category which specifies the use of the plug-in, f.e
-midi tool
-synth
-compressor
-reverb
-.....

users can download the stuff and rate it after testing,

f.e.
------------------
rate this plug-in
1.........10 stars
------------------
voting count
f.e. 100 votings
------------------
and comments....
------------------

now you could sort the output by categories, alphabetically and depending on the quality of the votings.....
which would make it easy to find the most interesting plug-ins....

btw this could be an interesting indicator for soniccore analyst/marketing team  to see what people really want.
