about sync
hello everyone,
I need advice on the best clock configuration I can get with my system;
noah -> rme fireface 800 <-> 2X pulsar 2
the -> and <-> links are adat connexions. I use the rme as an I/O device and the pulsars for mixing.
I also have a sync plate that could be used if needed. My questions are:
- which of the rme or creamware clock is best
- should I link everything using BNC cables or is the adat optical cables doing the job
thanks
Laurent

bnc cables would make it easier, anyway. all three have pretty good clocks, but not as good as one in a masterclock, so i wouldn't expect any beeter audio than the other sync setup as the clock's the same regardless. bnc is likely to be the lowest jitter connection, so there might be a slight advantage...
otherwise, if it works properly, it's good.

ok then, I like the sound already so leaving it this way won't harm anything
thanks again

but I'd still want to use the sync plate or fireface wordclock just for comparison sake.. the funny thing is that only one adat channel syncs up with either one of the pulsar 2 or the noah when I use adat cables only, not both i.e. one locks and the other syncs. This is apparent when looking at the corresponding adat leds on the fireface. adat1 is lit up while adat2 is flashing meaning the first is synced and the other is locked.
Otherwise when I wire the sync plate word clock out to the noah and the fireface word clock out to the sync plate, both adat1 and adat2 are synced but the fireface word clock led is dead meaning it doesn't recognise a valid word clock signal. This (word clock) led lights up if I use both BNC cables to wire the sync plate to the fireface and forget about the noah wordclockwise
but then the adat led displaying noah's connection on the fireface flashes..arf, I hope this is clear, I'd rather draw this on paper
The short version is: I have a feeling that if I use a BNC T connector plugged on the fireface word clock in and wire the sync plate word clock out to the first branch of the connector and then the second branch to the noah, and of course the fireface word clock out to the sync plate word clock in (ok forget about the short version) then all will be synced AND wordclocked? that is what I need you guys to confirm or not. what about terminators?
thanks for your help so far

ok here is the short version:
how do you wire up BNC cables on two machines that have wordclock in and outs and one machine that's got only one in to get a valid wordclock signal?
clap clap clap
PS: with this?

well, did you read the chapter about wordclock in the Fireface User Manual ?
it's very informative and answers some of your questions.
I would set Fireface to wordclock master, FF BNC out to Scope SyncPlate In, SyncPlate Out to Noah BNC.
Scope and Noah slaved to wordclock - thus all Adats should be in sync, too - in my humble understanding. Noah is probably terminated internally.
I'm not sure if that's an optimal setup with the FireFaces's reclocking abilities, since I don't have experience with that device - at least it reads pretty sophisticated.
cheers, Tom
