A matter of prices

Post by pistoguitar »

I'm starting to build my first DAW from scratch, as I'm willing to try to use two of them linked together in the studio.
I'm concerned though about the price.
This is a list of what I'm going to put in it:
Cooler master PSU 430W
Cooler Master Mystique case
Asus P5K3 Deluxe Mobo
Intel Core duo E6750 2.66 Ghz
Kingston ddr2 667 2024 Mb
Maxtor HD 80 Gb (system)
2x Seagate 320 Gb HDs
2x DVD writer LG
Asus Geforce8500GT video

This is exactly 1033,00 €. For buying only, I'm going to do the hard work all by myself (which is a lifetime's dream :D ). I've asked at the most reliable computer shop around here.
Do you think it's fair, or can I spare some dime buying different stuff, or online?
THX!!!

Well, I find having two drives comfortable. They're preatty cheap so... why not?

1. Asus P5K3 Deluxe has 1 IDE connection. Basically this gives you two IDE devices on one cable. If your 80 gig system disk is an IDE disc, take this into consideration.

2. 2 DVD writers wont do anything for you as long as youre not idoing a lot of copying. it also need power, and with 3 harddrives plus dvd-writers, you might want to consider a bigger PSU for stable use.

3. Bear in mind that if you need 1:1 copying, you dont need two drives. We make images these days :)

Mmmh... that definetly make sense!
At least I'm going to spare some extra money and power compsuntion.
Do you think 430W is enough for all of these things + Pulsar, Pulsar II, Luna and a TC Powercore PCI Mk1?
Just another pair of questions...
Do you find this a suitable config?
And what about the expense (yes, it's an important factor :D) ?

P.S. never did a 1:1 copy on the fly, I've had good teachers!

if you want to use all the cards together, then no, since the P5K3 has only 3 pci slots while you mention 4 cards.
I don't know if there is another board with more than 3 slots; s4l might have eventually digged one....?!

I abandoned the internal drive and use my dvd-r via firewire. not only less power consumption, but also less noise, and even that only if I need it. I rarely need to boot from cd, and reinstalling the OS occurs every some years only, and since the external drive is hybride accessible via usb2 and fw, I can even boot from that.

In facts I never got problems with my Mk1... Nevertheless the Powercore verbs are a light year far from Masterverb Pro!!! the comps work fine instead.
