Prodyssey needs an update

Post by Kymeia »

Prodyssey is a great synth and one of my favourites but it would be nice to see it updated to bring it into line with the ASB version and closer to the original. In particular I would like to see two features - the additional Moog based filter that has been added to the ASB version already and a more authentic duotone mode.

Oh and maybe a cosmetic improvement to the gui. The contrast between sliders and background is not clear enough and it's hard for me to make out where they are - I find the GMedia version's gui much clearer in that respect.

may be it depends on your graphic card. I have a 7600GT and everything is sharp and clear ... May be ... Prodyssey is also one of my favourites !

I have a great graphics card and one of the best monitors on the market. Its the colours being the same that is the problem - the GMedia Oddity has coloured knobs and they stand out better.

Well Prodyssey and SixString are the only Scope synths i do not have, don't need SixString as i play guitar so that leaves Prodyssey. Maybe with an update i would feel i need it, but for now i am happy with my Oddity (with some RIP valve plugins on the output). But if it had duo mode...

That is what made the ARP Odyssey's sound IMO.

Bowen synths have a unison mode that allows you to stack say a 12 voice poly to a duo voice, unison, 4, etc.

If SC would apply that type of feature to Prodyssey, that would be great. But just a giant detuning type of application wouldn't cut it. Stacking w/o the detuning is what's necessary. The same way that voice cards were put inside of Oberheims, to add more polyphony, and when you went to unison mode, it just grew bigger balls.

yes, in my case it's pure snobism...
as a schoolboy I saw one in the local music store and it looked so cute and cool at the same time... the price tag read 4200 DM ...unaffordable
I never had played a note on a keyboard, but I wanted that thing ...in vain

now that I could afford it has to be either an original or a one-to-one copy :D

cheers, Tom

Actually, it's the way the voices bounce around on it w/ measured portamento, especially trills. It sits right in between monophonic leads, and full polyphony.

Hope that helps a little.

its not magic, and you can reproduce it with two instances and a sequencer.

and just for the fun of it, heres a quote that didnt make that much of a havoc (according to true simulation):

"Perhaps the most notorious of these was the CAT, which bore striking similarities to the Odyssey. After threats of legal action from ARP, Octave replaced the original CAT with the SRM (Series Revision Model) and SRMII, which offered yet another form of duophony that Octave called 'two-note memory'. This grandiose name referred to a new keyboard scanning circuit that, if you played a two-note chord, memorised the interval between them and continued to apply it even if you then returned to playing monophonically. A form of programmable detune, this allowed you to switch between, for example, tunings in fourths and tunings in fifths, without having to adjust the oscillators themselves"

It's my understanding that the original duophonic mode sounded different from just using 2 voices - not sure of the technical reasons why but I assume it's similar to why monophonic modes sound different to just using one voice.

Even if Scope don't do this though I see no reason why they can't bring it up-to-date with the ASB version (with it's extra filter mode).

Piddi's link above explains it pretty well - and that the musically 'horrible behavior' could indeed become a feature once you adapted your playing style to the strange thing :D

thanks for the link btw, Tom
