Since I have free time to practice and experiment with Scope / Giga DAW's I will share a performance trick which is not in the books.
I suggested to members to buy Hanon's excersizes for dexterity, and confidence in quick passages. Czerny is also an excellent source of self taught control and coordination as well. And will really help here as one finger must be down at all times to make the portamento really sing.
I will use a monophonic source to explain.
Set your polyphony to one voice on a FAT BASTARD as the ProOne, or Minimax, or better yet the C4T from SHARC's retro plug company, as it's portamento feature has supreme and stable accuracy when playing monophonically. Can't believe this was a free synth.
Use maximum sustain and release in the ADSR area, then as your chops get strong delete it as it might not be nescessary.
Take one finger and hold it down. Trill a whole step below it and adjust the amount so that the slightest amount can be heard. Do it again at an interval of a fourth below, then the fifth below. You want to be able to distinguish the notes and their relation to pitch. But retain the amount of glide so it gives you the porta sound.
Now start with holding down the D note 14 steps above middle C. Start by pressing down the C 12 steps above middle C ( 1 octave ) and releasing it. You should notice that because you are holding the D down throughout this procedure, that by simply releasing the C, it gives the illusion of playing two notes with by only striking the C once. Rightly so as the D you are holding will re trigger itself when the lower notes are released, and you hear that porta sound which I call the Van Halen Synth Guitar Lick.
Try your excercises in Hanon, or Czerny with this and jump right into the pro world of synth licks using Scope !! Now do this with your thumb and play the pitches above the D, 2 steps above Middle C. But go up the keyboard. You do hear the possibilities of double licks like the bounceback of a string on a guitar don't you ?? If not I suggest taking a gun, and go into your garage and do the right thing.
These are little tricks I have used 4 years as a soloist. When playing lead lines, one must think " Lead ", or horn, sax, guitar to achieve the desired train of thought. I love trilling on notes while bending their pitch w/ the PB wheel. This sounds way cool also.
I have punished many boring guitarists live w/ my solo work. They usually go home and practice if they have any pride, so they can fight back the next night. This competition has inspired great ideas also, as those who refused to take nightly beatings returned with some licks that I wanted to learn. This is what live playing is all about my friends, There is no book for this. The battlefield is our learning area, and I refuse to be beat.
Try this when you get tired of those luscious pads that sound great, but you don't know where to put them.
Synth Addicts ashould have more fun when they play.
