Sample rate again

Post by bassdude »

In a discussion with a colleague over a new mix I will be doing where I need to
tansfer from 2" I was saying no I don't need to transfer at 96 and he was saying
well you need to transfer at least 48 over 44.1 for more accurate reproduction and
then I said well I am actually transferring at 48 but the transfers will be done at a
studio with first class converters that have first class filtering which means I could
transfer at 44.1 just fine and I'd heard some wonderful sounding orchestral
pieces beautifully recorded on otari 24 track at 44.1. In the end i ran tests to show
44.1 sampling reproduces waveforms accurately using external test gear (no
software). I thought some people might find results shown on an oscilloscope
instead of software might be interesting. Two tests at 12.2 kHz and 19.5kHz were
done. The top waveform is the analog output of the sig gen and the bottom
waveform is the analog output of the scope card. They are just sine waves but
even if the waveform was more complex, the result would be the same.
