Anyone out there use Wolf's SpEQtrum? Someone suggested it in an earlier post. It looks interesting, but is it a better replacement for the EQ tools found in DAWS or the ones within the stock standard Scope mixers/effects. What makes it "better" or "essential"?

the essential point is that you get a feedback of what's going on in the audiobands even if you are deaf - you adjust on top of the analyzer 
kidding off, but it may help indeed if your listening room's response is problematic, if you've been exposed to too loud noise levels, or simply against fatigue by listening too long...
also a convenient reminder in case you overlistened something - eventually we all function only partly up to our own expectations
I was always very happy with Wolf's stuff, he's a sophisticated developer.
His version of an RIAA vinyl 'eq' (which contains the same base processing as the later 8 band eq) worked with no audible flaws.
regarding CWA stock devices there is a big misunderstanding, the Fairlight console pictured in Janni's didn't-know-that-thread features exactly these stock devices for eq and compression - and it's a hell of expensive.

well, although I'm the developer I use this device regularly on my mixes, so please see my comments as a user
room response: it is described in the manual, how to adjust your room response by simply using the analyzer. Using spEQtrum to enhance your room response will result in better mix results (this is no promotion blabla, just the truth ! ).
You are able to emulate any eq out there, it just doesn't deliver a fancy user interface.
You are able to use it in a "musical" way (whatever this means) or just as a kind of 'swiss knife' due its ability to have different bandwith depending on the gain value.
You can make a cluster filter (two or more bands connected to each other), so you are able to make filters never been there before - automatable via *one* control.
Of course this overall flexibility might challenge some users, so I'm still (since at least a year) investigating in presets giving you easy access to all these possibilities by a simple mouse click (including vintage gear).
Right now I'm thinking about integrating a match EQ function, so you are able to analyze i.e. famous mixes and put their eq print right onto the mix you are working on.

actually I don't know yet. I even don't know, if what I built up in my mind will be possible in reality with just 8 Bands. It was just a suggestion from a forthcoming customer and after some brain massage I thought this should be possible in some way.
However I somehow need to justify the time spent on that to my girlfriend now. A good eating & a nice present might help there a lot .. especially since the former updates where all for free (translated to girlfriend language: "my god, will we ever go to bed at the same time ?
" ).

I have been playing around with two mono SpEQtrums in the output of Scope and Room EQ Wizard available from http://www.hometheatershack.com/roomeq/.
I have not got it quite right as yet but it occurs to me many project studios could benefit from being able to measure their rooms and send the data from Room EQ Wizard to two mono SpEQtrums to straighten out their responses and flatten room modes.
I for one would be happy to pay for such a version of SpEQtrumn that could accept the EQ midi data from the Wizard.

I don't know Room EQ Wizard, but if it sends out usual midi controller data, you just need to assign the corresponding knobs of SpEQtrum to them.
Btw, you don't really need a Wizard. There's a section in the manual, where it is described, how to adjust to the room response with a SpEQtrum stereo.
