Just a happy FYI about long STDM cables

Post by areptiledysfunction »

I purchased a custom built STDM cable from garyb which has a cable length of 24" between the first and second connector. We were both concerned that this situation might introduce clocking issues due to the length. So far, no problems with a Pulsar II card in a mobo slot on connector #1 and another in a magma chassis on connector #3. next week, there will be a third Pulsar card on connector #2 which is only 6" from connector #3. I will report back if there are any clocking issues due to the 1st card being 24" from the 2nd card and the 2nd card being only 6" from the 3rd card.

There is a specific reason for this. I have a 13 slot Magma with 4 x UAD-1 cards that are in various slots which allow them to all share IRQ #19 and no other devices are on this IRQ. The 7 slot Magma has fewer configuration options and due to this, only two of the slots are able to share IRQ 17 and 18. The other PCI slots in the 7 slot Magma will cause whatever card is used to either share IRQ 19 (with the UAD-1 cards) or IRQ 16 (with the AGP). However, if I use these two PCI slots in the Magma which can operate on IRQ 17 and 18, and put the third Pulsar PCI card in PCI slot #2 of the motherboard, it also shares IRQ 18 so now my AGP is on IRQ 16, 3 x Pulsar cards are on IRQ 17 & 18 and the 4 x UAD-1 cards are on IRQ 19.

This same configuration worked fine with 3 x RME HDSP cards so I'm hoping I will have the same success when I add the 3rd Pulsar card.

in case some problems show up, there's also flat ribbon cable with metal shield on the back (afaik), or did you use that already ?

cheers, Tom
