I'll try to get some patchbay info here. I'll start with explaining my basic patchbays setup.
I have 2 AMT8's (new XP drivers are here. Each connected to a pc with the latest and greatest Cubase and Creamware cards.
Although the AMT is told to sometimes give problems on Cubase (it's an http://www.emagic.de device, made for Logic) I'm quite happy with it. Only thing that I don't really know yet is how to make the chain PC1-usb-AMT1-mac_cable-AMT2-usb-PC2. Should work theoretically, but until further investigation that project is delayed. I use port 7 and 8 on both devices for inter-computer talks. I do not succesfully chain the AMT's. No big problem.
-The AMT8 can work as standalone patchbay or as computer midi I/O's. It will automatically recognise computer programs and change to 'computer mode'. All midi control is now up to the (one or more) programs using the drivers.
-In PatchBay mode, the first device to send Midi Realtime msgs will be recognised as Midi Transport (timing) Master. When a 'stop' sign is received, all ports will become available for a Sync Master to take control.
-In Patchbay mode, you can choose to load up to 50 presets ('setups') out the AMT, controlled via program changes on a custom port and channel.
-The AMT8 drivers are multi client, multiple programs can use the same port. Unlike Creamware's drivers.
The AMT does what I ask from it, I give it an 8/10 for my setup.
atomic.

I have some MIDI Patch type-stuff on ebay if anyone is interested. I am about to get an 8 I/O interface.
Any comments on the Steinberg Midex 8? I want to know if and how it works away from a computer (as a patchbay, merger, thru, etc).
I might get the MIDIMAN midisport instead . . .

Off course, it depends on your specific needs but, I think that the MidiMan(MidiSport 8x8) solution is an excellent choice. The price is very reasonable and it works well.
It's also interesting to note the proprietary aspect of some of the features of the Steinberg and Emagic solutions. Both companies are also known for their poor driver support.

Hmm... AMT8/Unitor8 work perfectly on PC and Mac, and have WinXP drivers now. If you use Logic, the timing difference between a standard interface, and an AMT is absolutely huge! I definitely want to upgrade to one ASAP.
If I used Cubase, I would definitely get Midex8 for the same timing benefits.
Looking at the Midiman 8x8, it does look good - nice to see you have the option of Serial interface on the 8x8 unit (the 4x4 unit I had didn't - USB only - which could pose a problem with heavy PCI). They also do not explicitly state XP support on the 8x8 page - but I imagine if it's not already working there, it'll be coming shortly.
I'm after an eMagic interface, because I'm a very dedicated Logic user. Make sure you compare an interface with the timing benefits to one without before you purchase, if at all possible
